Just a couple of photos I took while flying out of Henderson Field on Guadalcanal. The LCT would make an interesting subject for an Armortek model (amphibious). The Sherman was powered by two 6 cylinder engines driving through a combining transmission. These are only 2 of my photos, everywhere you walk on Guadalcanal is history and very moving.

If anyone would like some more shots I can add them to this topic.

Nice photo's Andy, keep them coming 8)

The Pacific, IMHO, was boring  . I watched the first 3 episodes then got extremely bored & disappointed. Not a patch of Band Of Brothers even though it seems the opposition, whoever they are, to the US soldiers always seem to be brain dead and run into a hail of bullets without thinking while the Americans can survive an atom bomb. I suppose that's Hollywood for you.

Thanks Antony

G'Day Antony
I agree with your impression of the new series. Band of brothers was an outstanding story that was held together by the men of Easy company. The Pacific ,I feel doesn't quiet have the continuity, but of course none of this detracts from the courage and hardships of those who battled through the campaign in the pacific.Anyway a couple of more shots for ya.The Sherman, after its service life was finished, remained in place as a target, and the left side has suffered many hits. The second photo is through the missing mantlet and shows the engine configuration.

Lovely shots of the M4A2 Sherman.

I too have been disappointed with The Pacific. It's not an area of conflict which has ever really interested me and I'm afraid this series hasn't changed that.

You don't engage with the characters in the same way as BoB - I still only know the names of three or four of them - and you don't really care if one of the cast falls.

Adrian.

I thought some of the later episodes on Peleliu and Okinawa had some excellent battle scenes. They even snuck a R/C halftrack in a foreground shot in episode 7.

I have'nt seen it yet, waiting for the DVD but you know that is the way the Japanese Army was trained, the enlisted men were not taught to think for them selves. Yet in spite of that, the fighting in the Pacific was the toughest fighting any where in the second WW. Daily progress was often measured in yards, even mere feet. It made the eastern front look like a cake walk.
Thats why they gave it to the Marine Corps.

That's the first time I've seen the Eastern Front described as a "Cake Walk". Try telling the 25 -30 million that died that it was a walk in the park. Typical, everything the US does is better than everyone else

Sorry to disagree Roland but this attitude gets right up my nose.

Hi Guys
I have got the set and looking forward to watching it.

Has any one watched the documentry "War Dogs of the Pacific"?
It goes all the way from training,to war footage,to what was to happen to
the surviving Dog hero's.
I have watched it several times since I recorded it,and it never fails to move
me,it brilliantly displays the bond between handler and Dog and their
invaluable contibution in the Pacific War.
Cheers
Phil

Sounding a little like a polititian there. I did not call the Eastern front a cake walk, I compared it to the fighting in the Pacific. Maybe 5 million Russians surrendered. The Japanese soldier did not know the meaning of the word.

Example, of the 50,000 Japanese soldiers on Saipan and Iwo Jima only a little over 2,000 were captured.

I bought the Pacific set last week prior to being forced to test more hospital vitals

The packaging looks good though :)

BOB would take some beating IMHO.

Viewing the set will have to wait as I have to test more NHS vitals next week 8)

Band of Brothers was fantastic! This is total carp? No real story. Very disjointed. In fact I would rather watch Emerdale and I hate that :lol
If you have not bought it DONT!

Grimenders is more entertaining

Hi Guys
I have whached my set of "The Pacific" also the bonus disc and I thought
it was a very good series that tried in as much as 7 discs can,to portray
just a fraction of what the Marine's and Gi's went through, both in preperation,in Battle and time out in Australia.
I also bought the Military History 5 disc set "The Pacific Hell on Earth"
this was also very good with re mastered footage in colour mostly throughout, and interviews from survivors including Sledge Hammer.
This really gave you a good insight of what they went through, not just
Sledge's division but other divisions and Gi's that also went into other
Islands,especially Tarawa and Okinawa
I shall be whaching my set of "The Pacific" again very soon.
"The Band of brothers" was also very good and I have whached that several times and will do so again.
I am now whaching a 4 disc set 538 minutes of "Russia's War Blood in
the Snow",Introduced by Dr. Henry Kissinger.
Lots of Russian and German footage that has only now come available
and interviews with survivors that can now tell the truth.
I've only whached the 3 parts in the first disc and this again is very good.
