On a radio control plane, in the event that the receiver looses the connection to the transmitter, it drops the throttle down to an idle speed so that the plane doesn't disappear off over the horizon.

On a tank, it can have the unexpected effect of putting one of the tracks into reverse at start up.

Hi Adrian,
The first time I took my Panther out,1 speed cont did not work. And the tank drop off the ramps, from the lift table, and the turret turn 1/4 turn. The tank run into my car's front Q panel.and the end of the gun tube it the center of the wheel.
And later I turn off the trans first and the tank took off and hit the house.
2 big OPS! 1 was not doing the bench test.
So I can see how a fail safe would be a good thing.
Dan
PS my bad things did not stop there,That tank I put though hell.

Hi Dan,
Failsafe in the case of most radios just controls one channel, which is usually channel 4 (used for throttle control on most planes, cars etc). In the event of a loss of signal it shuts down that channel to a preset level.
If you are using channel 4 & 1 to control your tank then all it would acheive is to turn off the left hand track, which could be a bit embarrasing to say the least, because if you were going flat out in forward direction and the RX lost the signal the the tank would slew to the left and continue in a circle. It would be nice if you could failsafe 2 channels and then the tank would stop but I have not seen a radio yet that has this facility.
Dennis.
