INSURANCE FOR TANKS

Hi guys,
I am looking to insure my tanks as part of my house and contents insurance. My present insurers (Caravan & Camping Club) will not cover me and have said I need a specialist co.to do this.I have 3 Armortek and 1 Mark-1 tank. I keep them in my garage, which is part of the house.
I thought if there was a fire etc I would lose the lot.
What do you guys do and are there any companies you know that cover this sort of thing. I don't want to insure them for any outside use, just here on my premises.
Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Dunc,
After seeing your driving I fully understand why you want insurance
As far as I remember, if you join the UK tank club you got a public liability insurance. I also have my models insured under a separate policy for fire and theft with Direct line, costs me £100 a year and they are both covered for £4500 and £5800, it is part of my home insurance but because the are so pricey they have their own policy. I had to provide receipts to prove how much they have cost.

Hi Duncan
Walter Midgley at
http://www.walkermidgley.co.uk/ do specialist model insurance. Some members of the UKTC use them.
Hope this helps.

I managed to get my insurance against fire and theft included with my house and contents insurance. The additional cost was only about £20. My advice would be to secure a few quotes for house and contents, including cover for the tanks, from several different companies.

Hi Allan,
The only problem with just doing the models on your house insurance is, they are only covered at the house, if they are stolen at a meet or show, you will get nothing!!!

Good subject! I wrote an article about how to obtain insurance for another hobby where we transport sometimes expensive toys about. See <
http://www.company7.com/library/insuring.html>.
My study of typical policies offered by major insurers in the USA concluded one is generally better off increasing the contents coverage of a residential policy so that the percentage of loss allowed off premises (usually 10% of total valuation) will be sufficient. So if you have $20,000 time and materials invested in a model, then up the contents to at least $200,000. This is more cost effective and just as effective as buying a 'floater' or other specialty policies that may be necessary for some other categories of valuables.
One the matter of liability off premises, one should discuss this with the insurance agent since they may offer policies for a hobbyist as they do for professionals.
