Can anyone tell me if there were casting marks on the turret mantlet and if so what were they and where were they placed.

Regards and Merry Christmas

Hi Steve,

Yes the turret mantle had cast letters and numbers.
At the late model they seem to begin with the letters "amp" and then 3 numbers.

http://www.panzerbasics.com/index_files ... erials.htm

The Saumur Tiger had "amp 347" and the Vimoutier Tiger have "amp 250"

Please note that the "AR" has nothing to do with the factory casting as they are a marking for the post war owner of the Tiger wreck named Alain Roudeix.
Mr Roudeix is refused to cut up this Tiger but saved it for us, a true hero!

Sadly Mr Roudeix passed away last year and his unknown huge collection of ww2 artefacts was put up for sale.

Cheers

Kent,
Thanks for the reply and photo,
When i saw your photo of the Vimoutier Tiger mantlet i thought that the casting numbers would not be seen as they would be covered by Zimmerit, But looking at the Saumur Tiger i see that there was no Zimmerit in this area.
Now to choose a appropriate number.

Many thanks and have a happy Christmas and great new year

Hey everyone!

I hope all had a good and rewarding Christmas!

I just noticed something and was wondering if I am just slow and everyone already knows this, or is this something worth noteing?

Looking at the over head view of the Vimoutier Tiger mantal from Kent Wiik, I noticed that the conical Mantal Rohr bolt locking tabs seem to stand proud of the mantal, as though there is a spacer between the bolts and the mantal. Is this me, that particular vehicle, or is this SOP. I had thought the tabs laid flat againsed the mantal.

Thanks everyone.

Brian

PS I should have looked. The bolts don't seem to be proud of the mantal on the other existing Tigers. Non -issue, Brian

Good spot Brian,
I have not noticed this before, all the other photos i have show these bolts flush with the mantlet. Not sure why the bolts on the Vimoutier Tiger should be this way but i belive it has suffered a internal explosion and maybe this has forced the gun collet forward, It coud be that the collet has been knocked back into position during restoration leaving the bolts proud of the surface.
Just a guess hoprefully someone will have the proper answere.

Merry Christmas

Casting numbers applied.
I have chosen amp337 which may have the chassis number 251104 ie produced 10 vehicles before the Saumur Tiger which has chassis number 251114 and mantlet amp347. when finished it will represent a 101 Tiger so hopefully the numbers are about right.

Excellent Steve!

Great photos and your Tiger looks awesome. Love the turret deck.

May I ask, where did you find the lower case lettering? I have not had much luck. Fortunately the mantle is a ways off for me.

Merry Christmas and happy New Year.
Best wishes
Tim

Hi Tim,
Thanks for the kind words.
The lower case lettering i made myself by cutting up sections of upper cas lettering and supergluing them to the mantlet, It was a bit fiddely but did not actually take to long. The joints between the cut sections have been masked by giving everything a couple of coats of Mr Surfacer.

Hope this helps

Steve
