Real Optic Prisms Tiger and Panther Cupolas
Posted: Fri Aug 21, 2009 7:50 am
Hi Guys
Here is the information on the type 2 periscope real glass optic prisms. These will be fully functional just like the real ones, however due to the high level of precision machining to make them work this single prism will be about the same cost as two of the type 1 optics used in the type 1 periscopes.
For those not familiar with these periscopes you should read my posts on periscopes at:

Type 1 and 2 periscope optic housings comparison.
The periscope and 6 scale comparison
How the type 2 works.
The real optic.
Pictures taken through glass optics for type 1 periscopes, the results will be the same for the type 2
Picture taken in workshop.
Picture taken through optic from same position.
Picture taken through optic of close up dollar bill.
Picture of the type 1 real optic prisms
My thanks and appreciation goes to Kent Wiik for the loan of the real periscope, without it I could not have made accurate housings and never been able to find out how the prisms worked.
These optics require special tooling to hold them during machining. The tooling cost alone is $2000.00. This means I can only produce these if I have a minimum of 100 units sold. To produce these and make them available to the hobby I am going to sell the first 100 units at cost to cover the initial tooling.
Tooling cost per unit $20.00
Production cost on unit $50.00
Aluminize two surfaces $10.00
Mgfl AR coating two surfaces $10.00
Cost per unit $90.00
Hopefully I will sell more than 100 units and will make a profit on units over 100. If less than a 100 are sold the tooling cost ($2000.00) will be spread evenly over the cost of the quantity sold if customers agree to it.
These are for the Tiger 1, Tiger 2 and Panther cupolas and the Tiger 1 late and Tiger 2 Loaders Periscope
Cost of prisms for the cupolas, 7 units required. $630.00
Cost of prism for loaders periscope, I unit required. $90.00
One unit could be used in the cupolas for those wishing to install a mini cam.
Here is how I plan to proceed with this.
1. E-mail me your requirements.
2. If I receive enough requests I will send invoices for $20.00 per unit to cover the tooling cost.
3. When prisms are made I will invoice for the balance of orders prior to shipping.
Regards
Mike
