Paint Problem

Hi guys,

Having recently taken delivery of my first kit from Armortek, the awesome Late Production Tiger 1. I've come to a point now where I need to spray the hull. I've looked relentlessly on the net for someone who can supply a larger quantity of acrylic paint to match Dunkengelb (Dark Yellow) as my only option at the moment seems to be to buy several dozen pots of Tamiya's XF-60 Dark Yellow.
Can anybody suggest a website/company that I may be able to acquire a litre of acrylic paint to match the colour I need.

Hi Mike,

Every decent, up to date, paint shop can supply any colour of paint in 400 cc.pre-filled aerosols.
However, the problem to get the matching colour to the original RAL 7028 (Wehrmachtsbeige) or RAL 8000 (Afrikabeige) remains.

I have been fortunate enough to find a German supplier of the original RAL paints in cans and the a.m. aerosols. This company is not a paint manufacturer but a specialist in the restoration of German WW2 motorbikes. Be aware that this paint is based on the original recipes and therefore requires a somewhat different way of spraying than the modern (e.g. Tamiya) paints. My testing results with their RAL 7021 aerosols are excellent.

Hello Mike. With my tiger and sherman hulls , once I have dry fitted the hull parts I always pull them apart again and clean with a 'Prep wash ' and then wet and dry sand all the hull plates to make shore you have a good key for the paint . I then use wattyl 'super etch ' In a spray can . This is a grey etch prime for steel alloy brass SS all metal . It can be left as a primer or under coat for years. Then you can use any top coat over it. The best colour for you to have matched to Dark yellow , at the atuo paint shop is Humbol 94. Just air brush this onto a card . Then clear coat this with a clear satin varnish . Remember when you take this to get matched at the paint shop you must ask the guy to add a flatting base to dull it down I think I had mine flatten down by 70% . hope this helps. Dale

Hi Mike welcome
I got my paint mixed by morrelli who do auto paint
in the uk .
They will do it for your own spray gun or make up spray cans for you.
I used for my Panther UPol etch primer from Halfords and just as a guide I used about 8 --500ml spray cans at £11.00 each.
I then used Red oxide over that. and now I am just starting the base coat yellow with my spray gun.
Please remember not to spray celulose over acrilics or enamel
There have been a lot of posts on the UK tank club site that say Tamiya
paint sprays are withdrawn due to safety issues and may not be back till the new year.

Hello,

another supplier of Wehrmacht paint is www.oldtimer-jehle.de located in Germany. These paints are originally (re)mixed for restauration of 1:1 vehicles according to original paints or original plaits. I bought a few cans for three color paint after 1943 plus red primer. The results even on smaller 1:6 vehicles like a Zündapp Side-Car Motorbyke are excellent if you lighten larger surfaces. BTW the original brown is slightly darker as usually suggested by Tamiya.

I would not worry about the colour being spot on, because no one actually knows what the right colour is for Dunkengelb! If you check out Tomas Chory’s book, Camouflage Colours 1939-1945, he lists five variants for this colour. All I did for my tiger, is find a colour I liked in a match pot, then I took it to a paint shop and asked them to mix me a litre, they could put it in a pray can if you ask them.
