Heres a simple mod that i have carried out to the sprocket caps to make them easily removable (As supplied the caps are just a interference fit)


Drill and tap the final drive gear shaft to take a M4 bolt


Remove some material from the cap so that it is a nice fit in the sprocket (this is the best i can do for a lathe )


Another shot of me removing the unwanted material


Open up the center bolt hole of the hub cap to give a clearance for a M4 bolt


now the good bit , take a M4-25 bolt and build a blob of braze (or solder ) on the head end. Let it cool then stick it in your lathe (drill in my case) and form a nice cone as per the supplied ones.


Fit the sprocket and taper-lock


Job done, just the details to add.

Clever use of the drill. Brings back a lot of memories. I nearly burned up my dads hand drill and drill press both <much to his chagrin> using them as a "lathe" when I was young. I used to make brass cannons for ship models with a file and drill long before I had a real lathe.

I recently came across another clever use of a hand drill. An ingenious german fellow using it as a poor mans spin casting machine. This guy is absolutely genious for coming up with this - a hand drill, metal cookie tin, and some silicone mold rubber - to make a fully RC 1/16 scale Famo half track by spin casting all the wheels and tracks using this machine. The model is an absolute masterpiece all being fully functional including the crane. Yes it is poweful enough to hoist the becks beer 6 pack!! Besides being a master craftsman, electronic wiz and superb inventor, this gentleman is quite the cartoonist as well. If my german was better I would at least post his name, but I could not decipher it from the build forum as I don't read or speak german. Perhaps our german builders know him? Perhaps he reads this forum? I would love to thank him for the build photos and inspiration.

I will see if I can find with the full website address (german modellers website) for those interested in seeing the whole thread.

I am posting these photos here soley in the interest of sharing some of the amazing work that can and is being done by other craftmen around the world - using a lowly hand drill and some superb ingenuity.
