Silver soldering.

Finally managed to get all the bits and pieces together this evening to try my hand at silver soldering for the first time.

I decided to start with the 222 mud guards as they are quite simple joints and given my clumsy driving, I'd probably end up bashing them sooner or later. The idea is that soldering all the joints should give them more rigidity and the ability to survive knocks, rather than just filling them with epoxy to cover the joints.

This was my first attempt - I was applying the solder from the other side so hadn't realised how much had pooled on the outside.

But even that cleaned up quite nicely. :D

I was a lot more sparing with the solder on the other joints and so they won't require as much filing as this one.

It's very satisfying to see the silver solder wick up a well prepared joint, especially when it leaves the minimum amount of clean up.

Whilst these parts aren't even close to the standard of some of the builds shown on here, I'm quite pleased with them as a first attempt and I hope they show that these sorts of techniques are within the capabilities of even the most ham-fisted of modellers

Adrian,

I think the mud guards lool really good. as with soft solder the thing is to take your time heating the joint so as not to over heat. The solder will flow towards the heat. I think you will soon be very proficient at silver soldering

Hi Adrian, that looks very good, if you do all the joints it will be as strong as a tank, when I fitted the mud-guards I did away with the screws, and used iron rivets, so the inside would be without protrusions

Looks great Adrian. Soldering on steel is a bit tricky I think. Not as easy as brass. As long as the joints clean up nice you did the job properly. The solder will add a lot of stiffness to the fenders.
