Panther Periscopes

Post by Tim Bowman »

I hope everyone had a great Christmas!

I took some time this morning to experiment with the periscopes for my driver, radio operator and loader. I tried to get the bakelite look for the prism housings. I will only be mounting the top half of these for external appearance only.

The prisms will be home-made plexiglass ones.

Tim,
Great looking periscopes, The Bakelite colour looks just right. Did you make the housing as well as the lens ?
Keep up the great work

Hi Steve

I wish I could take credit for the housings but they are Mike Stannard's awesome work.

Hi Kent

I painted a base coat of mostly black with some rust mixed in to give it a warmer, brownish color. Then I mixed rust with some yellow to get the lighter, orangey color and randomly stippled it on with a brush. Then I stippled on another thinner layer of the dark color I used as the base coat which helps give it that depth/layering effect.

Basically I just faked it. :)

Mine look like a lighter bakelite then your example but when they are mounted under the armored guard they look fine. I'll take some pictures when they are all installed.

Regards
Tim

Superb Tim :D

It's a real shame they are so obscured by the covers, especially having seen the painting and detailing of the whole thing.

Adrian.
