I know this has been dealt with before but does surrounding the speaker with a box make it worth while especially when the speaker is positioned as in the photo at the back of the tank facing the rear plate. I do not want to move it from there.

It's an inexact science

In theory, a box should prevent soundwaves from the back of the speaker from cancelling out the ones from the front, hence making the overall sound fuller.

In the case of our tanks, the boxes tend to be so small that they then limit the amount of movement the speaker can make and hence reduce the volume.

My feeling is that, overall, putting the speaker in a box is better than leaving it naked.

A wooden box should absorb the unwanted sounds and tend to make for a better result than a metal one (and I realise I recently posted a picture of a speaker in a metal box )

I will put it in a box and see what the effect is, perhaps I should have tried this before the question was posted. Thank you Adrian.
