We recently had a request from Bob to be able to share STL files.

This opened up an opportunity for forum members to share 3d print file as well as a potential security risk. To try to address this, what we have done is as follows:

Under GENERAL TOPICS there is a section called DOWNLOADS SECTION In this section you will be able to share the following file types: DOC, DOCX, PDF, STL, XLS, XSLX, ZIP.
No where else in the forum will you be able to share these documents types.

This Section is only available to members who are logged in.

Any issues, let us know.

Have you considered to only allow pdf, stl and obj? Sometimes it is helpfull if there is the posibillity in sharing 3D models as well.
May I suggest that maybe it is not neccessary to not allwow MS Office files? Word and Excel files can also be shared as pdf.

I was able to download Bob's STL file to my ancient MacBook and can manipulate the image, I'm hoping my neighbor can 3D print it for me.

I have no experience with 3D modeling software or printing, did the STL file contain just the image? Or should there be X,Y and Z inputs for the printer or some numeric information too? Or is it simply the modeling image, to actual scale, that the printer will then "read" and know exactly what to make and in the exact size as rendered.

Thanks in advance for any clarification, I think it will be super helpful in my future builds.

This is the part model in STL format, It is 1:1 size, but was created in inches. Good to note that for European users. I can easily model it in mm. All hardware is metric. The finished part uses M4 x 20 and M4 nut.

All the XYZ stuff (G code), material choice, inch vs mm for printing, scaling etc - is set by the slicer and end user.
