SPROCKETS: Brian's 2017 NO. 10 LATE TIGER 1 BUILD

Post by Brian Ostlind »

Ok I temporarily assembled the back rings on the sprockets but I had to order longer screws because 8mm won’t let me thread on half the nuts and the other half are hanging on by one thread. I did glue some final drive gears into the bearings on the drive housings. I was etch priming some hubcaps but got impatient and didn’t let them dry all the way so the little indents on the flat hubcaps repelled the primer so they look a little uneven. That and I think I inhaled some primer, that stuff is nasty.
I am starting to regret painting some parts in primer before assembly because loctite really ruins the paint and makes a mess.

 I think I got some glue on the bearings when I glued the gears in. I must have put too much on. I let them dry for only 30 minutes then tested to see if they spin and it spun a quarter turn then tried to return back to its place. I tried to push the gears out but all that glue grabbed them and they won’t budge. I can spin them they just drag a little. I have no idea how to undo my mistake maybe some sort of special gear pusher/puller device can out muscle the glue. Or I’ll just run it like it is, a little glue shouldn’t hurt a tank!

Did someone say that you can melt the glue with a blowtorch? Then Replace the bearings?

I never did put the oil seal the drive housings, so I could fix that.

When I glue the shaft in should I put the glue on the shaft or inside the bearings only. I did both the first time.

DRIVESHAFT: Brian's 2017 NO. 10 LATE TIGER 1 BUILD

Big job to take the shaft back out but I got them undone with the help of a blowtorch. I had put way too much glue on the shaft and it piled up inside the bearing. Just need to polish the parts and rebuild them.

If it was just dragging a little I was going to suggest to leave them be, but it seems you have managed to take it apart safely.

ROADWHEELS: Brian's 2017 NO. 10 LATE TIGER 1 BUILD

Post by Brian Ostlind »

I got some painting done! Just a small sample to check out my system. I was running a 1mm needle in the HVLP gun with a turbine compressor. Three coats later It looks ok but I am going to try a .8mm needle next time for thinner coats.

I haven’t painted any front sides but can do a mock up, and I am super excited to get the smaller needle and paint the rest of the wheels. I just picked up another gallon of this incredible paint.

Brian
The color looks great. Perhaps a little on the glossy side when wet. But after it dries it will be more matte (Flat)? Just curious - the outer facing side of the "H" shaped road wheels need the 6X metal tabs like your inner road wheels. Why paint the wheels without the tabs? Perhaps they are on the other side of wheel (away from viewer)?

My apologies to mark up your photo.

Hi Bob, this photo is a mock up. I haven’t painted any front wheel faces yet, that’s why the one in the middle is silver. It’s my round about way of doing a small batch to get the painting started and not make any mistakes on parts that show. The paint is Highly glossy, that’s just the nature of the paint I am using. I have ordered a flat clear coat from Mission Model Paints and they said it will cover the wheels without a problem.

Here are the correctly assembled wheels on a little piece of track. I wanted to check the spacing out. The inner faces have been painted, the outer front faces are next. I did have to grind down the hubcaps because they shouldn’t have been painted yet I got carried away. But everything fits.
