Wonderful model engineering Frank. Looking forward to seeing your dozen in action.

I once commanded a Chieftain dozer tank as a young squadron second-in-command and it was a pain in the backside. It was used a lot for digging protective scrapes for command vehicles, a job for which you really needed combat engineer plant. Net result was no sleep and often a damaged gearbox. Mind you, that was Chieftain, not Centurion, which was much more automotively robust.

I hope my Cent work better like your Chieftain.
Well now the Centurion is running.
At our heavy models, it is important for me to make sure a safe run. My rc equipment is from brixl special designed for functional models with 2,4 GHz:

To program the transmitter and receiver is very different to other rc equipment you can normally buy:
- The model program is in the receiver. Complete another idea to program but very easy when you realise the different.
- You can run more than 1 model at the same time. One in running the others in parking position.
- You have 3 program levels. To every level you can assign complete another function to the same joysticks. For example to run an excavator: Level 0 no function at all (safety level), level 1 to drive the chassis and level 2 to use the same joysticks to run the upper carriage with the hydraulic.

The 24V main fuse and the 12V main fuse (when it is out of work you see a red light at the top)

The relay to switch 24V (idea from Günter). It is important to install a diode in the 12V net to cut down the induction voltage from the relay when you switch it off.

The electronic switch (directly receiver to relay) for the 24V relay – level 0 or radio signal cut down => there is no 24V at the engines! => safe!

Like you see I have only one manual 12V switch.

Frank that really is a different and interesting system! Me I'm all for keeping it simple and Futaba 7 is so easy to use. An intriguing set up you have there- thanks for posting, I would never have realised such systems existed.

The diode in parallel to the relay coil is primarily to extend the life of the relay by reducing arcing across the relay contacts when it opens. A lot of modern high-current relays already have this protection diode installed in the package so another diode is not necessarily needed.
Its secondary effect is to protect any follow-on circuitry from voltage spikes on switch-off however if the following circuitry has been properly designed, it will have a protection diode on the input line which has the same effect.
However better safe than sorry, if unsure fit this extra diode for peace of mind. It wont affect the battery life at all. Maybe unneccessary expense but diodes are not expensive.

Very impressive engineering, Frank! :shock:

I use Brixlcontrol also and are very happy with it. The only system that plays in the same league, I think, is ScaleArt in case anyone suffers from the burden of excess money... :shock: But I could be wrong - it is hard to keep up with and understand the functionality of these electronics gadgets! :lol:
I have been asking Brixl about their advertised 50A current sensor module for years. The 10/15A version does not survive long with these models...

@Mark Heaps: Your analysis of relays is incorrect. The coil has nothing to do with the contacts. The purpose of the protection diode is to protect the transistor that is operating the coil from overvoltage.

Hello all,

some of my comrades also use Brixlcontrol sets, which are very universal and reliable to use. The programming mode indeed differs from all aircraft modelling RC-sets, with some benefits and some handicaps, but the benefits outweigh.

I for myself however prefer my aircraft modelling RC-set (Graupner MC 32 HoTT) through its various possibilities of telemetry. In my opinion it is essential for each tank modeller to know the extracted capacity from the driving battery to observe the 50 % rule of discharging a lead acid battery preventing premature breakdown. My telemetry sensor not also shows this value pemanent on the transmitter display, but also the max. driving current (up to 300 Amps!) and the battery voltage. And now the best: various acoustic warning levels are programmable to signal deviations of important voltages, temperatures and so on, without permanent watching the transmitter display.
