Re: Churchill Prototype
Testing the springs on the Churchill.
Although we calculate the theoretical spring rate and compression values, there is nothing like a real test to validate things.

Re: Churchill Prototype
Railway wheelset anyone ?
This is one of 22 wheelsets on the Churchill
And some wheelsets from "Railway Wheelset & Brake Ltd" for comparison. Can see where the idea for the Churchill roadwheels came from ...

Re: Churchill Prototype
There's nothing like the gleam of newly machined parts in the morning, either of one's own making or others'.
In some was seeing someone else's is better as I don't have to clean up all the nasty turnings and chips...invariably getting
something stuck in a finger...

Re: Churchill Prototype
A bit more on the bogies for the Churchill.
On the real thing there are 2 types of bogies - Bogie Type A is on stations 1,2 and 11 on each side. Bogie Type B is on stations 3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and 10. The main difference between them is that the the suspension arm for Bogie Type A has additional flanges to increase its strength in order to cope with rough terrain.
The image below shows this, although it is a little hard to make out the strengthening flanges on the suspension arms. In the photograph the differences between the bogies is most obvious between stations 2 and 3.
Note that when you look at some ww2 and post war images, the bogies were occasionally mounted in incorrect positions - it was a case of needs must as mechanics made do with what they had. .
Below is a image of the two types of Churchill bogies on our kit- the suspension arm is cast. On the Left is Bogie Type A and on the Right Is Bogie Type B And some more photographs of the two of them.
. .
On the Churchill, as you would have guessed from the above, there are a total of 22 bogies stations - here is a production line of them.
