Michael C, when the Chieftain did the AC1, I felt the review was very commendable towards the AFV,
It certainly cleared up some of the stories of a twin 25 pounder armed cruiser tank from down under if it were true. It also showed what a nation with it's back to the wall could build to fend off a ruthless enemy in short period of time.
Certainly one in the eye for the British who'd fielded some pretty bad AFV's (Valentine and Matida 2 excluded) up to that point in the war.
Recently read the Haynes enthusiasts factual book on the Panzer V (Panther) (it was cheap Phil £3.50). It absolutely crucified it, other than having a good gun and decent frontal armor, it was difficult to maintain, liable to break down, with no spares, weak side armor and shortage of experienced crew made it effectively a piece of junk. This being lorded as the best tank of the war. Which doesn't any make sense after reading the book.
Criticism sometimes defies logic and context. One wouldn't say the Panzer 38 (T) was a great tank or even a good tank, but without it, Blitzkrieg 1939 one of the greatest tank offences ever could never have taken place at the time it did.
Like you say, just enjoy the clips, They'd never let me climb around inside the AC1 anyway. I'd usually damage myself somehow or worse. Getting out of a Chieftain managed to rip the pocket from my shorts
