Hi Paul,

What a cool study with the Panther between the Tiger I and the King Tiger. I wish I could be with such an oustanding club. I'll post pictures of my mid Tiger soon.

Best Regards,

Birt

Its good to see the tanks out running at a meeting. I hope it becomes a successful regular meeting, you certainly have a good venue. A little far for me as its about 270 miles from my house to Blackpool.

Hi Richie,

I’ve got to admit the sight of your Stuart running from Antony’s King tiger did make me laugh  , and when the track came off, well, you could feel the sense of despair from your crew  . Luckily for them he was out of ammo and only wanted to play in the mud!

I hosed the tracks and wheels of my Panther this morning to clear some of the mud off, you should have seen the amount of small stones mixed in the mud  , I can only think they were picked up from the car parking area when we packed away. I have also repositioned the main on/off switch so that it is under the right hull hatch as i found it a little incovienient under the engine hatch.

Guys,

Paul, thanks for the comments on the Stuart, it was my mainstay vehicle at the Peter Shaw running days before I took the plunge with the Armortek models. They are amazing tanks for their "toy" origins. The only weak spot was the rear return roller axles which quickly gave up the ghost, but I modified that one with metal axles and bearings, and also metal bearings in the road wheels.

I see you all picked up some mud on the day. Small stones are the bane of the Tiger and Panther as they get trapped between the track horns and then get dragged around the return rollers. This is what could be stretching the tracks. My Tiger has been run extensively on mud and from experience I can advise the following.

Wash all the mud off with a hose, don't let big clods of mud dry on the tank, this will promote rusting and also stress when you start up and pull all the clods through the tracks. Don't use high pressure water jets as these can force water into the bearings and drive out the grease.

I don't know how the plated track pins will behave but the old plain ones I have have rusted quite a bit, and gone from the stage of popping the spring washer and running out to being well and truely stuck in. This is ok until one needs to do field repairs. I last broke a track at the Armortek stand in W&P and Lee Sellars will confirm that we had to use heat and lots of force to get the pin out. I now have one pin which I ensure stays free so that I can split the tracks and get them off easily. I can assure you that if you have to recover a tank its much easier if you can run it along on its wheels. After washing the tracks I roll them up and drop them in a bucket of diesel for a couple of days. This soaks into the pins and has stopped them rusting. I then hang them to drain off the worst and refit them. It keeps the tank running as smoth as silk.

Hi Alan.
Yes thanks for the tips, when i assembled my tracks i did put the pins in diesel overnight but i do think that soaking the tracks is a good idea cheers
Last weekend i lost a wheel from my Tiger the retaining cap head screw came loose, {cheers Richie lol} when i got it home and had a good look all the screws wer a bit the same, now i had smeared greese around the open ends of the wheel centres to protect against damp and i wonder if the greese can desolve or otherwise effect the threadlock on the retaining screws? I spoke to Steve about this and he told me he had experienced similar on his Panther but only one side, this however is all round the tank.
I am thinking of putting lock washers on the screws to see if this will help.
Any ideas Paul.

Paul,

I've had a couple of screws come loose. I guess its more prone to loosen screws on the left side of the tank (viewed from the rear) then on the right as the left hand ones are lending to be undon by the rotation of the wheels when moving fwd. Just give them a firm nip up and they should be ok but lock washers would also be a good idea, better than threadloc.
