Catwalks

Post by Stephen White »

Finished the catwalks today with the anti-slip mesh rivetted as Jeff has done with one sixteenth copper rivets. Even they look a bit big but the overall effect seems OK.

Made a start today on making the extra bracket for the rear end of the catwalks.

No visible means of support, wonderful what bluetack will do.

Front catwalk supports

Post by Stephen White »

First day in the workshop for a couple of weeks. There's been so much inspired use of brass parts on the forum that I thought I ought to have a go:

These are the front catwalk supports which are functional:

I followed a tip of Mike Stannards and got some Solder-it paste from the States.

It's certainly easy to use but I'm not wholly convinced, the joins seem to be a bit hit or miss. Maybe that's just a question of getting used to it. I reverted to Baker's and silver solder for the main joint.

The supports installed:

Also added the small brackets on the upper hull:

Just waiting for my piano hinges from Belair before doing the front and rear mudflaps.

Bradley, looking back, I don't think I ever posted the changes in height so here goes (bearing in mind I'm using Steve Winstone's excellent brackets):

The back and two centre brackets should be 9mm heigher that the original setting. The front bracket should be 7mm lower that the other three. The additional supports at the very front and back have to be set according to drawings (I used the Panzer Tracts ones) to give the characteristic drooped effect. Hope that makes sense.

All the best.

Stephen

Rear catwalks

Post by Stephen White »

Detailed the rear catwalks today, ie the moveable section. Added the lip, a hinge doubler and the fixed portion underneath. It took forever to fit, to get the right angles.

You don't have to be mad but it helps.......

Post by Stephen White »

I wasn't happy with the one sixteenth round head rivets which I used to attach the anti-slip surface to the catwalks - on the original, the rivets are barely noticeable and these looked like the domes at the Eden Project.

Image

So I ordered some 3/64th from EKP and trial fitted one. Despite the now oversized hole, it worked. Bad news. So now, I've removed all 200 or so and replaced them. Still, I might otherwise have been making progress.

Image

Made a start on the front mudguards by filling in the detents in the original and adding the reinforcing strip.

My Pz III will be ready for the Open Day - I'm just not sure which year.

Thanks Simon

Detailing of the front mudguards completed, together with new rivets. Support stay for the rear mudguard added (Jeff, noticed you'd done it as well).

Finishing off the front mudguards, I've added the two retaining latches, fabricated from brass and a shaped piece of ally - yes, soldering them provided hours of entertainment.

The Armortek rear mudguards lack the inner flange, so there is nowhere to mount the rear latches. Next job to remove the mudguards, fabricate a flange and solder in on. Something about time spent in reconaissance.......
