Dug up some photos of a 1/16 scale Tiger which shows the plugs are offset.

As promised more photos of the zimmerit process. I really want to get this oh so messy process out of the way (certainly the hull anyway) before I start on the internal details like the engine bay and that beautiful Maybach. The turret can be treated as a separate unit. One for the boss.... I have found you a tow hitch pin!

Some zimmerit examples for reference, in use it sure did look rough.

Right one of the biggest trade tips ever......dip your tool in WD40 before you start the impression making process, then wipe clean and dip again for every new line, start at the top, push into the paste and create a wave of the material as you head down the section ( don't lift off) creating the divet and pulling that excess paste with you, then wipe off the surplus which should be in front/underneath of the tool as you come to the end of the plate , again all this whilst never lifting off! If you mess up simply oil/dip and go down that section again.

Basically the WD40 stops the paste sticking to the tool and therefor the paste is easer to handle, the light oil seems to have no effect on the curing/hardening of the tile cement, the paint adhesion seems just fine to.

Maybe practice on a scrap piece first.

Hi Kent, I haven't fitted the heater cover, what about the starter crank access cover would that have zimmerit? You have the best AFV library photos ever!

Phil you are using reference pictures showing post war applied zimmerit, the Tiger II from Bovington is all post war with exception of the rear which is mostly original, the Saumur Tiger is completely post war parts such as the drivers vision port and the starter cover were not covered in zimmerit, as Kent says the crew heater cover on a late Tiger is essential, beneath the rear mudguards their is no zimmerit, the Tiger is coming along very well I suspect it will be completed before October at the rate you are building, the internal details and the engine will make a huge difference.

I need to find or make the heater port cover, shame it's not included in the kit. Ref the French example...I think they used porridge in their post war paste! I sure hope it will be completed by October as the Chieftain will be waiting

I know there were different styles of zimmerit used during the war so how do you pin down the right one.

Makes me glad I’m building an early Tiger.

Phil, the crew heater comes with the Tiger II kit to from Mikre stannard or if you have a 4 jaw chuck this can be turned on a lathe.
John, all Tigers had the same zimmerit pattern.

Tiger build coming together nicely. The finish on the Zim pattern looks good, but will the profile on the rear be OK when the tank is the right way up - shouldn't the overhang be at the bottom of each indent rather like a tiled roof ?

Hi David, I did think of that and held the tool at a neutral angle ( the guys applying the zim would have the tool at all angles) so it would look acceptable anyway up or down, the same with the front plate. You will have to wait and see when it's the right way up in the photos tomorrow. In the mean time turn your device up side down to check.
