WOW that turret is looking AMAZING!

I will confess that I haven't done much research on turret casting construction...
Mine is definitely a one piece cast... but it appears that this is where the two molds were put together for the pour... then this line is cleaned up.

I'll go back through my information and pics and see what I can come up with. I do know that some of the turrets of WWII tanks have been VERY rough...

Hi Phil

Just spent some quality time looking through your thread. Excellent work. Nice touches on the turret casting details.

Kind regards
Tim

Thanks Tim
Its a nice tank to learn and try out some new modeling skills.
I chose exterior pollifiller in the end and coated it with the spray
filler that Bodo recommended.
The spray filler seems to seal it nice,I can stipple it as much as
I like and the milliput sticks well to it.
Just been stippling at the moment but I have bought a little air
erasor which I plan to try out with the spray filler on the smaller
casted components.
Cheers

Turret Castings

Post by phil fitzpatrick »

Hi Dave
Thanks for your comments :D
The Turret Casting subject is fascinating in its self
I found reference to 2 factories that began the production of T34/85 Turrets.
The Novo Tagil Foundry in Nizhni Tagil and one at Irkutsk.
It said in each factory had variouse techniques which lead to the different appearances,
and the one with the flatened sides may have been produced at Nizhni Tagil and
possibly the composite one at Irkutsk.
Would be nice to hear of any info you find out in time.
Cheers

T34-85 model 1944 "Flattened" "Step Jointed" Turret(Zavrod 183 Style) I Hope :?

Did a bit more work on my joints, fitted the Mantlet Guard and Turret Lifting Hooks and just did the vision
slot on the right side for this model turret.

The poor casting of the original make modelling this even more of a challenge. The turret looks great. Well done.

Thanks John and Adrian :D
Its about to turn grey soon then the green I have been using as an under coat,I will
only use very light coats though to see how it goes and the finish will be with my
Air brush.
Looking forward to doing the markings :)
Moved my Hull into my spare bedroom now the nights are getting darker early and pinching
my build time,so I can Air brush the lower hull before the Tracks go on.
Cheers

John's comment about poor casting is interesting. There is no doubt the German wartime tanks were over-engineered and production capacity suffered. We in the West probably do regard some aspects of Russian wartime tank design as crude and therefore comparing poorly. I've spoken to Russian tank officers about this and they have an interesting and valid perspective. Make it simple, cheap but effective where it matters and you can have a lot of them. They viewed Western tank availability as crippled by over-complexity and unreliability. Ask anyone who has crewed Chieftain and they will nod in sympathy. As the Armortek range expands and we're seeing great skill in replicating the originals, all sorts of insights start to emerge. Now, perhaps Mark or Thomas Benedini could introduce an unreliability module. The King Tiger owners would snap them up. Thanks Phil and John. Great stuff.

I was speaking with a serbian tank crewman yesterday. He was having a look at the Tiger. He said they had some T34s and T55s still. He said the cast parts sometimes had holes that were filled and patched from the factory. Roughly made but sound. The finish on this T34 looks perfect. Will look great with some paint.
