Re: HAVE YOUR SAY
Just voted, but non-commitally, I’m afraid
. They’re both good choices ! The Churchill, if a Mark VII, is good for late WW2 and Korea, and has almost endless conversion potential as a ‘Funny’. The Chaffee will please our Colonial Cousins
, and again served in WW2 and Korea, and still further if you go for more obscure nations and conflicts.
Would I buy one ? If money and time were no object I’d have both ! The Churchill would be a 7RTR Crocodile as used in Korea, and the Chaffee would probably be Filipino, again in Korea (yes, the Forgotten War is my current obsession !
). But there are other tanks I would jump at first ( did somebody say Whippet ?
) so I’ll be keeping my powder / money dry. Anyway, I’ve got a Lee, a Cent, a Rolls-Royce and a 25-pdr to finish …..
But thanks, Kian and Monique, for the opportunity to express an opinion ! It’s a great idea, and I hope it proves both popular and informative.
Best wishes, and stay well,
Chris

Re: HAVE YOUR SAY
Hi,
Interesting choice but to be honest I am just glad that a challenger 2 was not on there as I want one of these but i am not in a position to buy one yet.
Am building a 1/96 USS Missouri battleship at the moment and it's a huge challenge but enjoyable one.
It will be interesting to see which one comes out on top.
Regards,
David

Re: HAVE YOUR SAY
I had written a comment early this morning but was side tracked and never pressed enter...
Both of the choices are good but I'd prefer the Churchill over the M24. The M24 is a favorite and not given proper due in the larger scales.
To my mind the Churchill is more of a WWII tank as the Chaffee came late and was really a Stewart replacement. Not sure how it was used after the war but I know it didn't show well in Korea against t-34 types but that shouldn't be a surprise as that was a role it wasn't intended for. The M24 did have a fairly long service life around the world however as battle scenarios go after Korea these might be limited.
I'll begin making a space for my Churchill...

Re: HAVE YOUR SAY
Churchill.....yes! That's what I have voted for, she would make a great model, it's big and so very impressive, went up against the tigers and those lovely tracks are right there in your face, (I'm already planning some battle video) which in my opinion need to be made from steel please, reason as I said they are "in your face" on show, have that iconic pattern and it's that iconic design that may be just to fragile if made from ali. How good did those Chieftain's track look in steel.....brilliant!
The Churchil's drive train also needs to be geared down as the vehicle was a plodder! Which mk? I dont mind they all looked good.
Steel tracks and a scale speed who could resist? I want one!

- This is the nicest looking track link example, the other type looks like they had tried to save money.

Re: HAVE YOUR SAY
I have to admit I know nothing about the M24 but a quick run around Google seems to show it was only briefly used by British forces at the end of the war, then handed back. On the other hand, the Churchill must be one of the most iconic British tanks of all time, and fought all the way from Tunisia to Berlin. Plus there's the link to Tiger 131, all the funnies for D-Day etc.
I would be fascinated to see the Venn diagram of the location of people who voted for each tank.

Re: HAVE YOUR SAY
Nice photos Jeffrey, that example has the cheaper flatter track links, I prefer the other type.
As I'm very anal about the tracks on any model I wouldn't want the cheaper flatter profile tracks so I will just have to wait and see what's offered.

Re: HAVE YOUR SAY
Anyone out there remember the model of Churchill that was built in the 1950's and presented to Bovington and I restored it to working operation a few years ago.

Re: HAVE YOUR SAY
If the choice falls to the Churchill, it'll be interesting to see which Mark (or Marks?) Kian selects.
The obvious choice might be the 1942/43 Mks III/IV, the former with the more square plated turret, the latter with the cast version. The latter would probably the less easy to produce, involving a casting. Obvious because 4 Troop, A Squadron, 48th Royal Tank Regiment were responsible for the embarrassment of Tiger 131 in Tunisia with Mks III?IV.
The main factor would be availability of an original to measure. The Tank Museum has both a Mk III* and Mk IV as runners. The Mk III* is in the process of being repaired to running condition after a failure at Tiger Day 14 last year. It has the square plated turret. The Mk IV has the cast turret and is on long term lone from the Churchill Trust.
The other Churchill on public display in the Tank Story Hall is a Mk VII, in the form of a Crocodile. The base vehicle was also known as the "Heavy Churchill" and is a much up-armoured variant, used from D-Day onwards in Normandy.
There is a Mk IV with cast turret in the Conservation Hall
There is also a Mk II in the Dieppe exhibition which should appeal to Canadians. It has a dummy gun.
For the exotic minded, the Tank Museum also has a Mk III AVRE with the Large Bang Slinger on display and a Mk VII AVRE with a Smaller Bang Slinger in the derelicts park (aka the "Reserve Collection").
Other collections are available.
