After a bit of thought I have come up with this - see images. I was very impressed by the idea of soldering but struggled to imagine how to hold the spoke under tension with one hand whilst stabilising the wheel with the other and wielding the solder and iron with my third and fourth hands. Here the bungees and forceps do the holding and tensioning and leave my two hands free to solder.
I can now apply pressure to the ferrule with the iron whilst applying solder.
Has anyone else resorted to innovative approaches?

A plan so cunning you could put whiskers on it and call it a weasel!!!
But did your wife say anything about unscrewing her coat hooks from the front hallway?
Very well done! And so simple! The genius is in the simplicity!
