If Mark ever got round to making a Chieftain, you could simulate the huge clouds of white smoke which were the tell-tale symptoms of impending engine failure. The L60 engine was notorious for cracked liners which allowed neat coolant to enter the cylinders and burn off with dramatic results. There must be some film on YouTube. I've still got the makers plate from the last engine to blow up on me. So much for multi-fuel engines. Rumour had it that the overall design was based on a Junkers Jumo aircraft engine but it wasn't man enough for the job of hauling 56 tons around.

Now the Cent, with its Meteor........

Having read the Rolls Royce book on the Meteor, it was interesting that they scoured the country for failed Merlins to convert, as the Meteor didn't need to be as reliable as the Merlin

This is a piezo water based system mainly sold to the model boating world. At the moment I am using a variable resistor to control the fan speed but it will need a bit more development on the electronics side.

Hi all,

I was just thinking.

The motors on the AT tanks are DC. Can't a DC fan be fitted to the exhaust which is parallel to the motor power: faster motor, faster fan, plus you would get the surges. Mightent that work?

I like that piezo system ,I wondered if they could produce enough mist/smoke but that system looks pretty good, Thomas sells a piezo type has anyone tried it would it or could it produce the pressure that is needed ?

Piezo

Post by phil fitzpatrick »

Hi Phil
In dennis's demo vidio above it is using a 21.5 waste pipe, yet you can
here the fan and see the power possibility.
I saw his first demo and other vidio's and it stops and starts instantly.
Its all down to your electronics like the difference's with Armortek's and
Richies,and the pipes I think.
Cheers
Phil

This is what we have been waiting for for the KT that I am building at present, does Dennis manufacture these?
So if it's run using water in theory any water soluble dye could be used to produce a soot effect ?
Do you thing it;s got enough volume for the KT?

I think that's the important point with the smokers. The power that's generated with all these systems isn't enough to give the desired effect especially outside. All it takes is a slight breeze and the smoke just drifts. What is needed in alot more POWER from these fans to push the smoke out of the exhausts at a much fast rate. I know Richie is working with larger fans but I haven't seen any results yet.

Also when the tanks are stationary the exhaust is more like a pulse than continuous, another thing to take into consideration.

How are you getting on Richie :?:

Thanks Antony

I'd be interested to see whether something which colours the water would also colour the smoke.

The other issue which was mentioned ages ago is that if the dye is ejected with the water vapour, you've effectively made yourself a water based airbrush. Good for adding realism to the back of your tank, not good for the clothes of people around you

Piezo

Post by phil fitzpatrick »

Hi Phil and Guys
Phil Dennis is developing his own electronics,He told me that the warrany
would be void on the basic Piezo if die was put in,I suppose it could block
the piezor Thing.
But when did that stop anybody experimenting.
Aswell as the pipes been reduced which might increase the power look,
you could also run 2 in tandem, they do a small one half the size, that might
be better than making the fan too powerfull that might create other probs.
With regards to the smoke been blown away I suppose its easy to forget
that a 20 mph wind is 120mph for our Tanks.
I saw a posting,I think it was Adrian's on a recoil system he was trying,
using the Picaxe electronics to control the slow return.
It needs a clever fella to programme the picaxe to do all the liitle things
that exhausts do.
Any way I've got to go and put the Scoop Six on to see if I can win some
more money to invest in Armortek.
Cheers
Phil

Just to answer a few questions, the smoker is now installed in the tank and am now concentrating on the electronics. Haven't tried it outside yet but all I am hoping to acheive is a cloud on engine start for a few seconds and then a cloud on acceleration and virtually nothing on run or tickover. The problem at the moment is starting the fan on engine start which has to come from the TBS5 and I don't appear to have enough info on that at the moment. The cloud on acceleration can come from the drive motors via a timer. I leave the fan running very slowly which keeps the manifolds filled with vapour so when you give it full bore you get a decent cloud. Hoping to produce a video shortly.
As phil says supplier has stated in paperwork that if colurant is added it invalidates the warentee and I am not sure what effect if any it would produce.
The advantage with the water based system is that it works straightaway and only takes 1 amp and no smell. Early days yet.

I like the no smell bit, the oil jobies give me konk sting and runny eyes for hours after exposure to the smoke, so much so that I avoid being in the same room.

Hi Guys

An interesting topic :P , now who wants a great looking tank with a drift of smoke :( its very simple, high output pressure  then control the heat, that controls the smoke 8) so you can have from CROP SPRAYING TO JUST A THIN MIST OR EVEN NONE AT ALL :P up to the owner.

Ant
I now have the fans but Smokers Still under tests

Phil
I used to run the water smokers, great in the summer, no good on cold days unless you use warm water like I did, BUT BE WARNED, THEY DO CAUSE RUST AROUND WERE THEY ARE.
