Paint shade of OD green

Post by Aaron Taylor »

I have walked around 3 pershings on display some were od green some dark od green and semi glossy for presentation some are really dark one was a faded USMC mint green tank...Marines I swear.... I found this product any input on correct shade Etc would be appreciated. Please Armortek Staff and fellow modelers chime in.

It's the Duracoat finish WW2 AFV paint which is more durable than rustoleum and not as smelly and easily applied I've used the Duracoat before and it's not magic but not at all bad either..... I'm curious if this would be a good shade to start with the other is way to dark for me.

Aaron,

I am no expert on paint color for the Pershing, but I think you can go with any shade that you prefer. I too have seen various shades of green and greenish/brown. Tamiya bottle paint in Olive drab is a very nice color. Tamiya has Olive Khaki which gives you a brownish look. I personally used Rustoleum Camouflage lacquer based spray paint from big box stores. Used about 8 cans, but I primed and painted all surfaces before I assembled. Mine is more of a darker green if you look at my thread you can see. Actually it is a richer darker green that it appears in the pics (at least on my MAC monitor).

Some users just have a color mixed from a paint store and use flat latex house paint. It is really is up to you. Hopefully others will chime in here with more expert advice. And also allow for the weathering and if you plan on doing any of that. It can change the overall color a bit.

Hello Aaron,

There are so many Olive Drabs available and most are different shades. If you are doing a WW2 Pershing then you want something close to Olive Drab Number 9. From 1956 onwards Olive Drab became FS34087 so a late Pershing in say Korea could be that colour. Many modellers have their preference to the correct shade and of course scale appearance applies so a 1/6th tank will look a darker shade than that in 1/35th. Then you have weathering to do so essentially if you like the colour go for it. Very few modellers are going to criticise an Olive Drab finish.

Tony over at Tony's Workshop on YouTube told me that he sprayed his Pershing in RAL6022 Olive Drab from aerosols. I thought that the colour looked about right, so I used that as my trigger to get a couple of litres of matt/lustreless RAL6022 mixed by my local car paint supplier.

Here's a link to a RAL chart, but difficult to tell differences on a computer screen.
https://www.ralcolorchart.com/ral-class ... olive-drab

I found an interesting illustrated article on Olive Drab via the Internet Archive - A look at getting the 'right' colour by Steve Zaloga. First published in Military Modelling magazine back in 2002.
https://web.archive.org/web/20121226065 ... -drab/4536
well worth a read in my view. In it he says
"Before describing what Olive Drab is, Id like to describe what its not. Probably the most common mistake I see at model shows is the tendency to paint US World War II tanks in various shades of dark green. This stems from a lot of artwork that depicts US armoured vehicles in dark green shades. The old Tamiya kits from the 1970s such as their Stuart, M4A3 Sherman, and others, are one of the causes for this misconception. But this mistake goes back much further.... ....The colour of US vehicles was Olive Drab, not Olive Green."

The jury's still out on my paint as I'm only just about to start my build proper after my missing parts turned up today after clearing customs, but I thought that I couldn't go far wrong with an actual matt RAL mix. Time will tell!

All thank you for your input I appreciate it!! I'm wondering during war time production if paint wasnt a greater than equal to Mil Spec with different vendors. Im going to play with the color by adding black to the shade that i get to see what happens. I dont want it so dark i cant use detail shade on it but then again these tanks are so big weathering is an after thought after a cruise on a lake bed or back yard which the dust is like flour in this area
