South West Model Show, Bovington - 4/5 September

Post by Chris Hall »

The Armortek Fraternity have again been invited to take part in this. All the details are below, at great length ! But, before you plough into it, I'd like you to think on this ...........

Like all of us, Bovington has suffered over the last 18 months. To them, the lost income from visitors is huge. Therefore, in the short 'season' remaining, they're trying to put on as much as possible while still adhering to Covid restrictions in order to protect all visitors. Hence the restrictions on the number of both visitors and exhibitors.

So, before you think "well, that all sounds a bit limiting, so I probably won't bother this year", regard it (a) as a chance to get out and about again, and (b) a chance to help Bovington rebuild. The reward will be in the future - we are very much in Bovington's Good Books, and it's very likely we'll be given much more favourable treatment when the current travails are just an unpleasant memory. To misquote JFK: "ask not what your hobby can do for you, but what you can do for your hobby".

Exactly the same comments apply to TankFest on 17-20 September. For the 2021 Show It won't be as it used to be, but it'll still be a great event (the highlights for me will be the Spitfire and Lancaster flypasts, and the Japanese Ha-Go tank). I understand that, following Kian's post, take-up has been low. So have a rethink, and get your application in !

And now, the instructions for the Model Show. As usual, please express your interest to myself or Stephen White, stating which day(s) you're interested in, and what Armortek model you'll be bringing. We'll also need to see your Public Liability Insurance, which is a must-have but we can advise if you haven't got it.

Some pics from yesterday's SW Model Show at the Tank Museum, Bovington.

Running area was generous, in a large marquee but shared with other scales. Some of the buggys were lucky to survive........

Some video to follow. Great variety of models, from the WW2 classics, Sdkfz 7, Jagdpanther, Pz III, Tiger, Tiger 2, M3 Lee, to Cold War Cent and Chieftain.

For the Churchill community, the IPMS Churchill SIG stand was a must. Probably fifty plus variants (I didn't count them) on show, all in 1/35th and mostly the work of one man (that figures). Plenty of inspiration for variants of the Armortek model.

Thanks for the pictures Stephen. Looks like you were given a bit more space to stretch the tracks.
Were you allowed to use the smokers in the enclosure?
All those Churchill variants.
Certainly lots of choice on offer for a new Churchill build.
Probably a new Armortek customer that might be tempted to join the big boys. And finally
Was the beer tent close by?
Oh Man, I only ride em I don't know what makes them work,
Definatley an Anti-Social type

Peter, you were much missed but we drank to your health.

It was a sizeable running area although it's less easy when there is a mix of one sixth scale and tiny model land rovers beetling about at high speed. Very tempting targets......

No, smokers were certainly not advised. Strange then that there seemed to be a build up of mist in the marquee towards the end of the day...... My compromise was to switch off the hull smoker but somehow, the barrel somehow kept puffing .....

It's no exaggeration to say that you could build a unique variant with every single Armortek Churchill model produced and still have a few left over, if the production run is anything like other models. The 79th Armoured Div "Funnies" were very largely based on redundant Churchills as later marks took over in the run-up to the Invasion.
