Hi Guys
I am a complete novice with my first kit.
The problem I have is that I need 5 x 0.5mm shims so that the wheel doesn't move back and forth on the axle.
The photo is with 2 shims on the axle.
Clearly I am missing something but what?
Any help appreciated.
thanks
Bob

Re: How many shims on a UC front bogie axle.
Bob I agree there is a need for a few more shims to centre the wheel on the swing arm. I have used appropriately sized washers from my bike spares. Also you will loose a bit of play when you tighten the axle nuts. This is a great kit to work on, my advice would be to build it straight from the box as a dry build. The beauty of these kits is that as you get more experienced you can unbolt it and start again if you want to upgrade it.

Hi Graham
Thanks for confirming and your advice on building which I will take.
Maybe later I will it paint it but I could cause untold damage to it!
Do you Loctite the axles as well as the bearings?
All the best

Hi Bob
I haven't Locktited (?) anything yet, you may have to undo nuts, etc later to get at something else. Leave locking anything until the final build. Unless you are certain that it does not need to be moved. Have you tried rivets yet ? With care and a bit of practice or just glue them in place with a few key bolts to keep it together. It is worth looking at Dave Dibb's Nr 18 for more tips. Instead of rivets/bolts there are 7BA Roundhead No slots screws from EKP Supplies, these look like rivets but are threaded bolts with 7BA nuts. Sorry not making much sense - bit late for me![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)

Hi All,
8ba look best to replace the rivets and if you do go this route I suggest the 1 size smaller nuts. All from EKP.
Cheers

Hi Graham
Few more silly questions and thanks for the advice so far.
1) Do you Loctite the nuts on the screws.
2) Can I Loctite the bearings in place at this stage.
3) Do I assemble the whole thing with holding bolts and then take it apart and reassemble it.
Many thanks
Bob

Re: How many shims on a UC front bogie axle.
Hi Bob
As other forums say there are no silly questions.
As all answers it depends.
Loctite goes on the the end of the screw so that it will be taken into the nut, I think.
Yep Loctite the bearings in place, stops them dropping off/
As to using holding bolts first and assemble it up - it depends. Some parts like the angle strips can be riveted on, say, one one side so that the head is where it can be seen. I pre assemble some parts like the above angle strips and small brackets you are certain will not need to be removed. Fixing/riveting the angle strip along one edge gives you chance to bolt the other side into its location.
Don't forget to allow the engine cover and main bulkhead to be removed when you are installing the motion and sound packs. The idea would be to assembly sub units that can be added when needed. The main example of this is the engine cover which can be built with all its bits off the model.
I hope this helps. The 'Knowledge Base' on this forum is useful.

Hi Graham
I hope you are having a nice evening.
I have started to read the knowledge base and it is proving very useful indeed.
Many thanks

Re: How many shims on a UC front bogie axle.
Hi all,
I assume that the reason for having component er0229 is to allow the wheel enough movement to self align and the movement should not be shimed out other than an M8 x 0.1 thick on each end to prevent the outer race on the rotating wheel bearing rubbing on the static er0205. Basic wheel alignment can be obtained by the requirement to shim the space between er0205 and the wheel support frames to prevent the excessive bending of the legs of these frames when tightening the nuts on the end of each axle.
This has to be the reason for the length of component er0229 as it would be simpler to make it shorter and use an M6 shim between the wheel and er0205 to prevent the wheel from binding on er0205 and then to use additional M6 shims to aling the wheel within the frames.
Keep well
David

Hi Guys
I am wondering if its to do with flexing the track for the steering that you need some play in that part.
Regards
Derek
