Universal Carrier variations

Having been vacillating about buying a UC I have ordered one so I am in the Stage One 'wanting to learn all I can about them and their variations, before Stage 2 'deciding what model to build (with a possible change of mind later', I am asking if there was ever an official or field modified UC with a weather hood? Thanks all who have posted photos already, is there any news about possible reprinting of the books mentioned elsewhere?

Hi that’s a T16 carrier made in the USA. It’s longer than the universal with the extra road wheel.
I’m sure I’ve seen uc’s with canvas hoods, I’ll have a look through my books and downloads and post any I can find.

Here is a couple of images of carriers with frames and one with a canvas cover
unfortunately it only shows a small section of the UC. Having done further research
the first photo is the canvas cover on a Lloyd carrier.

I’ll keep looking.

The two UC’s on the left of the photo look to have frames that would support canvases.

Hi after a little more digging.....

In volume 2 of Nigel Watson’s books on the UC he says “we see numerous photographs of the crews of these vehicles with makeshift canopies over their heads! It was not until 1943 that we see a canopy being issued as part of the carrier equipment “.

The first photo is of the prototype cover..

The second photo is a carrier with the same cover, this time in action. It’s not a good image!

Thank you all for these pictures. Sorry for the delay at replying, I have been away with my other obsession - pottery stall in Penrith - so yes thank you. I asked because when driving the UC around it may seems a bit more realistic to have a cover over the dummies sitting in the carrier.

Ha Graham were you doing Pot Fest in the pens?
I did it many years ago before my spine started to deteriorate. I had to give up
Throwing, it was too painful to centre any amount of clay. Didn’t enjoy slab
building so sold most of my kit over two years ago.

Yes it was the Potfest in the Pens postponed from August to last weekend. Despite all the COVID restrictions, and we only missed the lockdown by a week, it was well organised now by Matt, Geof's son. I make sculptures of grotesque people - latest are bishops. Sorry bit off topic - I have a 25pdr and my son and I bought an early Tiger 1 which he has in Oxford so I need another challenge, the UC hopefully with a tow hook.
