Painting the Elefant

Post by Armortek »

To officially launch our in-house painting service, over the next few weeks we will be painting the Elefant Heavy Tank Destroyer.

We will document progress along with notes on the techniques used. You will see that in this case we are starting with the already-assembled model.

Step 1 has been etch priming. In this case finished off a can of Halfords Etch Primer before moving on to the prefered U-Pol Power Can Etch Primer

Next step has been to add some texture to the metal.
This has been done with a fine car filler. To get the right consistency, the filler is left to dry out a bit to give it a "tacky" texture. It is then applied with a brush by dabbing it on.
The filler can also be used to fill in any holes.
It will need to be left to set for a day before the next step - light sanding to flatten the filler slightly.

Here you go Ray - took the Elefant out for a drive on the warmest day of the year so far.
A real testament to sealed lead acid batteries holding their charge - the tank has neither been driven nor charged since last Oct/Nov and the tank still managed some good 15 minutes run time in grass before "going a bit too slow".
