Just for absolute clarity, where the diagram shows ELE and AIL, you need to use the THRO and PITCH connections on the receiver.

Thank you, Adrian and Kian, both. The mist is beginning to clear and I now start to comprehend the view through the mud!

Adrian,
I now have motion on both sides and functioning steering. Many thanks for the wise words.
Now all I have to work out is the winch motor. I’m leaving the sound module until I’m feeling a bit braver.
