Brass mesh would be easier to soft solder to the brass frame.

What size is the aperture ?

The ex Mike Stannard parts have another layer of much finer mesh underneath the coarse one, but I don't know how that came about.

Re: Vince's Tiger 1 late variant 2017
That is actually from where I got my mesh. They only have the fine brass mesh. I needed a #4 size mesh with a 5.45mm aperture.
I also got the #12 size fine mesh that goes under the course mesh of the two large grilles.

Thanks Adrian for trying. I saw that one also. They have exactly what I needed but they are very expensive. They have a minimum order value and I doubt that they do international delivery from the States.

Try Amaco Wireform mesh. It’s made in the US but is available in a range of sizes and patterns from art shops in UK. It’s used by sculptors for armatures.

Re: Vince's Tiger 1 late variant 2017
Finally finished all the mesh covers. It took more time then I expected but I think it was worth the effort.
The fine mesh is "stitched" to the course mesh using thin copper wire and most probably when I come to attach them permanently to the grille I will use the same method.
Am I correct in saying that the finer mesh is used only on the larger grilles?

I think the fine mesh is only seen in one photograph? I think all the meshes were field made and exactly how they were fixed varied. Interested to see what info others have...

Re: Vince's Tiger 1 late variant 2017
Hi all,
On David Byrden's site he mention that the fine mesh was placed under the mesh screens and not just under the air intake screens, that is not what periodic photos show us.
http://tiger1.info/EN/Mesh-screens.html
The only known photos of the fine mesh is a serie of photos taken of sPzAbt.503 at Kursk time and the fine mesh is only on the air intake grills.
David's page about the mesh screens is from 2001 and much has happend in research since then.
IMHO the fine mesh was purly an in field custom made add on for sPzAbt.503 and a number of periodic photos tell me so, but if future information will emerge I am willing to change my mind.
Kind regards
Kent

Re: Vince's Tiger 1 late variant 2017
Hm. I don't see any fine mesh at all in the photos Kent?
There is another interesting detail of the mesh: The waviness of the strings is in fact 2,5 periods per square. Not just one hump where they cross. I think I have seen this before, but not quite paid attention...

Yes Christoffer thats my point, there was no fine mesh attatched from Henschel.Christoffer Ahlfors wrote: ↑Thu Nov 22, 2018 7:53 pmHm. I don't see any fine mesh at all in the photos Kent?

And yes, David got it wrong it was no hump where the strings crossed and the strings was wavied as can seen here in the photo below.
Barn find in Normandy from Wittmanns last stand.
Also please note the absent of the 45 degree fold down at the left and right side on this late type mesh screens.
And yes Vince, its fun and a nice add on to our hobby to learn new things you didnt even know existed on your pride and joy.

Re: Vince's Tiger 1 late variant 2017
As the engine deck is basically ready I thought I would paint it. The only things to add were the fire extinguisher and the tow rope brackets. So I first fitted the Armorpax fire extinguisher using a 2X20mm bolt. Then I started work on the brackets. Some modifications done on them and then I realised that I needed some 2.5mm CSK screws. Anything below 3mm is unobtainable here so I need to order some. As I was playing around with these tow rope brackets I remembered that on a late Tiger 1 the tow rope is attached to the hull roof slightly differently then previous variants. It is attached a little rearwards than previous versions and at the back of the tank it slightly overlaps the small grille panel. So fitted some temporary hardware to the brackets and started experimenting with the position on the tow rope.
I think I have to move the front tow rope brackets 30mm backwards to get a decent overlap on the rear grille.
I have a question regarding the fire extinguisher decal for a late Tiger. Should it be this one:

or this one:
