It's my understanding that the road wheels were either left all in the base colour, or painted completely in one of the camouflage colours, as a rotating wheel with striped camo on it shows up much more more readily than one which is a single colour.

Spot on Adrian. There is specific mention in the various Heer Tarnanstriche instructions of the need to keep rotating parts in a single colour in order to avoid creating a stroboscopic effect which would compromise the camouflage. That principle is pretty common amongst AFV operators.

You have to disregard contemporary colour schemes seen on museum vehicles because they’re so often inaccurate. The Tank Museum King Tiger is a classic example. It has camouflage extending onto the road wheels. Wrong.

There is another consideration. German wartime AFVs were supplied from the factory in a single base colour. Camouflage was applied at unit level. Tanks crews by and large follow Zipf’s principle of minimum effort. Why bother applying camouflage to the running gear when it will immediately be covered in dirt and when the vehicle will generally be hull down to the enemy in static positions?

That said, you can find exceptions, especially when a vehicle has been tarted up for inspection in barracks.

No camouflage on road wheels (just like no rust on tracks.......)

Hi Brian,

I agree with Stephen and Adrian, painted roadwheels will stick out when running the tank.
But at this Late Tiger1 period of the war it was up to each unit to decide what paint sceme to be used and painted road wheel on Tiger1 did exist.
However on SS101 2:nd company 2:nd zug they was plain Dunkelgelbe but with the always seen grease stains.

I'd say those look good too! Although the resemblance to WALEE is there as Adrian pointed out - the grime level looks good! The model will add its own weathering as you drive it.

Where does it belong and where does it not belong? Is there a list? I want to do the top of the hull and turret is that some sandy texture?

Not sure how relevant it is to a Late Tiger but the top of the turret of 131 at Bovington is as smooth as a baby's behind.
