Its the bolts on the wheels that are going to be the problem.

Trick on the steel fasteners that are rusted into aluminum... get a crack-pipe torch... Well that's what we call them. Butane mini torch.

Heat the screw head... use some penetrating oil... WD40 has been mentioned, it's good. So are Kroil, PB Blaster and numerous others. They all come from the same vat in New Jersey, I think. The marketers just add a different label and tweak the smell a bit. Anyhow... between some heat and penetrating oil And you will (most of the time) be able to get the screw out. If you strip the threads, re-tap for a slightly larger thread size... and drive on.

Another tip... before trying to remove... tap the screw head with a small mallet or ball pein hammer. The shock often frees up electrolytically-corroded threads.

These little guys are really great for putting a lot of directed heat on a tiny area. Also for soldering.

Cheers,

Heat worked wonders for the stuck screws in the Sherman. I tried soaking in various lubricants like WD40 but heat always won.

As long as the screws aren't stainless, you can use tap removing solution in an aluminium pan to melt the screw away.

For the ones I couldn't remove from the Sherman, for example the M3 screws in the sprocket, I took the parts to a machine shop who used an EDM machine to erode them away.

If the wheel hubs are alloy you will want to buy the upgraded steel version, if you can't get the screws out of the wheels then remove them with the hubs turn them over and spray either WD40 or better yet plusgas which you will be able to buy from a car accessories shop plusgas has vastly better penetration ability than WD40 but you will have to leave it for a few days to do its work.

I take it there were no electrics and rc gear in the 222

Hello Andy!

The work will definitely pay off.

For a reasonable price, I would have taken the vehicle too.

By removing rust oxalic acid (weak concentration) could also be helpful. Hereby I have good experiences in the de-rusting of steel (military ground finds). For aluminum, this acid is also very well applicable.

Have fun and success with the restoration.

Greetings from Germany.

Michael

Happy Birthday Andy,
hi Mark,

If the rusty car should be sold, I would be very interested.

To end as a flowerpot, it would be a shame. :D

Wow that is some serious mis-use / abuse on that 222! I was thinking it was a flower pot too!

Hope you can bring her back to life. You will probably have to remake or have someone make some new parts. The MG looks like a gonner (ie lost cause).

Best of luck getting her back. A mini sand blaster would be better for gross rust removal on panels etc. You would have to disassemble the model as this unit is small.
