Paul -

Making your own decals, especially unusual ones, is relatively straightforward and very satisfying. Just use the right decal paper (inkjet or laser), and don't forget to spray a fixer (like clear varnish) over the top before you put them in water !

The only difficulty is with white decals - obviously home printers don't use white ink .... Unless you go professional, you either need to cut them out of a white background, or print round the edges in a base colour and then touch it with paint. Tricky, but rewarding.

Good luck !

Hi all,

I have had time to set out the decal artwork sheet this weekend, and I have managed to get everything to the required size. I know its a bit basic and most of the lettering is for inside the turret, but let me know what you think.
Artwork.jpg
I have a question that has been bugging me since I started this. I am changing the tiger to Grossdeutschland tiger A23, and in the photos available it shows that it has black helmet markings, not white. One on each of the turret side vision slots and one on the turret bin
Black helmet markings on the
Black helmet markings on the

Before I go to print these on the decal sheet, does anyone know why its a black helmet??

Cheers, Paul.

The artwork looks excellent Paul. I would just check what the printable margins are on your printer to make sure it is all within the print area. Sorry if that’s blindingly obvious and you’ve already done so. Don’t forget to apply a couple of coats of satin varnish over the printed decals before you use. Can’t help re Grossdeutchland but I’m sure someone like David Byrden on Missing Lynx will know if you don’t get an informed answer from here.

All the best.

Stephen

Thanks for the reply Stephen. yes I have already printed a test copy on plain paper to make sure all the sizes are right. :D Don't worry, I would prefer you to point it out. life has taught me to listen to others before acting, no one can think of everything, but adding other ideas to your own can make you look like you know what you are doing!

I thought Kent or Per would have been all over the Grossdeutchland question, but if no one gets back in a few days I will drop David a quick email, its been a while since I pestered him.

the Großdeutschland stahlhelm marking could well be red as opposed to black though the division did use both colours as well as white, i'm not aware of the coulours representing different companies i'm also no expert on Großdeutschland.

Paul
Agreed the artwork looks great. What software do you use to make the graphics? I'd like to try making decals.

Regarding the GD, I don't profess to be any expert.
But what I see from my books:
Black helmet = low visibility, ie heavy combat tanks, Tiger, Panther w 3 color camo
Stug Abt = white helmet w/black outline, Stug III w 3 color camo
Soft skins: white, black or white with black outline
Panzer grey vehicles (early war): white helmet or white outline helmet
PzGr Div Brandenburg - red helmet
Fuhrer Begleit Rgt - yellow helmet
Fuhrer Grenadier Rgt - Blue helmet

I have a photo of Oberst (Colonel) Langkiet's Panther A, GD pz regiment Commander - helmet is black, or very dark color.

Above from: Squadron Panzer colors III and Squadron Pz Gren Div Grossdeutschland

Hope that helps,
Bob

Bob, re software for decals, see the Knowledge Base topic which covers the subject (link on a previous post). Paul used MSWord here, which is fine for lettering but for most I would suggest using PowerPoint. It’s much more flexible but is not that much more difficult to learn for anyone new to this. If you really want to refine your decals, an editing package such as Photoshop Essentials is recommended. The KB topic covers that too. Regards. Stephen
