America's Mark IV

Post by Chris Hall »

There was an interesting post on Twitbook recently, from the National Armor and Cavalry Museum, Fort Benning, Georgia, USA. They've recently found the turret of a Renault FT17 used by the American Army in WW1, which has been dug up and is being restored as an exhibit - it seems that the US has very little to commemorate their use of tanks in WW1. Here's a picture:

What caught my eye, though, was the Mark IV Female in the background. I believe this to be Britannia, which was shipped out to the US in 1918 for War Bond drives and ended up at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds as an external exhibit for many years. She looks in a sorry state but is now, hopefully, up for restoration / preservation. One of only 7 Mark IV's still known to exist.

Any of our American colleagues know anything more about this ?

All the best,

Chris
