Hello there,
Thank you for your feedback.
The tiger is not a static model.
The drive and the electronics is a proprietary development.
It is better to take the manufacturer's drive, because my version is very time consuming.
On an internal expansion I have omitted.
The Tiger can be used to drive better long.
I prefer to build models.
Driving is not important to me.
I will in the future rather exhibit the model and little ride it.
I can only recommend that you use the complete kit from the manufacturer.
Besides family and my profession I have built six years of the Tiger.
I'll publish my knowledge on painting, Zimmerit and Details for Tiger 131 from 1 / heavy SS Panzer Division 101, with Untersturmführer Walter Hahn here.
With Facebook Armortek be seen just an old photo of Tiger Walter Hahn.

Cheers,
Detlef

Hello Detlef

A very impressive model you have there, I am starting to do research on the tiger tanks and I see that you have fitted spare track links to hull front is this for a set time and date in Walther Hanns service record as the few photos that I have of his tank does not appear to have the spare links fitted.?

Regards

David

Hello David,

Unfortunately, there are just a few information available about the Normandy Tiger 131.
I also have made many attempts to obtain the appropriate hue from this period.
I've tested a lot of colors in museums.
I have adopted Tiger 132 and 133 and i put chains on the hull front of Tiger 131.
Because there are no front pictures available of Tiger 131.
The Tiger 132 and 133 have chains on the hull front.
Pictures from both machines (132 and 133) are available
Each department (101 / 1,2,3) of a corp has similiar models and equipment.
This is the reason of my actions.

Greetings
Detlef

Hello David,

here I have received a lot of useful information about a Tiger 131.

http://wehrmacht-lexikon.de/waffen-SS/e ... eilung.php

http://www.panzer-archiv.de/

http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/

http://www.tanks-encyclopedia.com

http://www.histomil.com

http://www.panzerbasics.com/

A high recognition value I have striven for.
I did not want to overdo it.
A little Armortek should be retained.
Additional parts can be easily removed in order to maintain accuracy.
The box at the stern does not belong probably to Normandy Tiger.

Greeting
Detlef

Hello Detlef,

Thanks for all this extra information it is very much appreciated.

It will not be long before I receive my special edition tiger 131 from armortek, this will be my second kit and I will build it as close as I can to the original on display at the tank museum at Bovington.

Not knowing a great deal about tanks I am just trying to get a bit of knowledge about the tiger tanks and in particular the difference between any tiger with the number 131.

I will not be starting this build for at least 6 to 9 months as I need to finish my centurion build first. But now in the dark evenings I hope to start learning a bit more about the tiger tanks.

Again many thanks for all the info.

Regards

David

David (and Detlef)

You'd perhaps be interested in the subject of a document I found in the National Archives (WO 291/874) "Army Operational Research Group Memorandum No. 601 - AFV Armour Distribution: Comparison between Panther and Centurion under Heavy Attack" dated Aug 1945. The British War Office knew that the Mark 1 Cent could defeat Tiger but wanted comparative data on Panther, which they regarded as the greater threat. The study showed that at best, Cent Mk 1 and Panther were very evenly matched.

I've never really appreciated the popularity of Tiger, which grows year by year, whilst Panther is relatively disregarded. Reliability issues aside, Tiger lacked operational and tactical mobility, although it achieved the goal of armour "shock action" ie it had an undoubted psychological effect out of all proportion to its actual effectiveness on the battlefield. In some respects, Chieftain suffered from the same shortcomings as Tiger and I know from experience what that feels like if you have to operate the tank.

That said, my wife got the first Lottery Grant for the Tank Museum to restore Tiger 131 and as a result, was made an honorary member of the 44th RTR Regimental Association, making her far more of an expert on Tiger than I am, so I'd better shut up for the sake of marital harmony.

After which rant, I just wanted to recommend two good sources on Tiger 131, apart from the recent Haynes book. If you look up David Byrden on Missing Lynx, he's done a lot of posts detailing the build standard of various Tigers. There is then a hard to find book:

The Modeller's Guide to the Tiger Tank - Patrick Stansell.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Modelers-Guide- ... 1932033785

The latter may now be a bit dated but it's got an extensive set of sketches detailing the tanks evolution.

Enjoy building the "50 ton target". Stephen
