Hi Gents.
Kent, I think you've summed it up. Quite right, Jentz and Doyle do cover this in their book. I should've looked more closely. Essentially version 2 (above) is version 1 and vice versa. The later manufactured 'early' style turrets having the simpler loaders periscope assemble, (the earliest types had no periscope in this location) and from what I make of it all 'mid' and 'late' production turrets, regardless of roof type had the more complex type assembly, all probably as you suggest, for reducing the different types of periscope/prism required.
Per, again thanks for the pictures, always worth a thousand words!
Kind regards,
Simon

Hi Kent, Simon and Mark.

Yes, I think I made a small mess of things and didn´t look close enough at Jentz and Doyle´s Tiger I book as both drawings are there. This is how it should be;

* version 1

Image

This uses the driver and MG operator´s type of periscope (2 part) but with a smaller armoured cover and on Tiger´s with the "dustbin" commander´s hatch.

*version 2

Image

This uses a new type of periscope that´s used in the new commander´s hatch and fitted to turrets with the new commander´s hatch.

Kent, thanks for setting things straight and I hope I got it right this time.

I too would have noticed the later type but at the moment all my books are out of reach while we renovate our house I also have a number of pictures of the inside of the Saumur Tiger to reference I had forgot about the second version.
