Taper Lock question

Post by Steen Vøler »

Hi all

Just a question to the Taperlock that I have been wondering about

Would the correct procedure be

1-mount the pin to the drive Axel

2-put the taperlock bush into the sprocket

3-put in the grub screws and make a Loose fit

4-install the sprocket with the bush on to the Axel where the pin is already installed

5-push it in place with correct distance to hull

6-tighten the grubsrews

Done

I have tried other methods putting all on to the sprocket and then push it onto the Axel

Looking at several builds on the forum, it seems that there are no uniform way do it.
cheers
Steen

I would say that would work. Be careful not to overtighten the grub screws! It is better to err on the loose side and having to retighten, than to either damage threads or not being able to ever remove the sprockets again. Even a light tightening of the grub screws produces quite a squeeze on the shaft!
Also, I have noticed that the sprockets tend to wander a bit on the shafts as the grub screws are tightened, necessitating a few retries before they sit tightly at the proper distance to the hull.
Regarding your other problem with noisy track, this distance might be the issue. You could check if the noisy sprocket teeth consistently rub against either the inner or outer side in their track link pockets.

Good luck!
