"The Most Secret Place on Earth"

Post by Stephen White »

My Regimental Colonel has circulated the following to the Royal Tank Regiment:

"For information, there is a new paperback out “The Most Secret Place on Earth – The story of the East Anglian village of Elveden and the birth of the world’s first tanks”. It’s written by Roger Pugh, a local from the area, with a foreword by Lord Iveagh of the Elveden Estate. The book is a short (144 pages), concise and informative account covering: the birth of the tank; the men involved; the first tank training and experimentation efforts; R&R in the local area; through to deployment to France; the battle of Flers; tank actions in Palestine; and in the final chapter, a brief summary of subsequent actions to final victory, including an excellent account of the first tank v’s tank action at Villers-Bretonneux. From a personal perspective, rather than that of a military historian, I found it to be a superb account; easily read, fascinating, well illustrated and above all enjoyable.

Recommended for anyone building the Mk IV or just with an interest in the first and oldest tank unit in the world, the Royal Tank Corps which evolved into the Royal Tank Regiment.

Fear Naught.
