Wobbly wheels?

Hello All.

I'm hoping that I can tap into the vast amount of knowledge on this forum. I'm doing a simultaneous build of both the limber and 25 pounder. I've assembled the wheels as per the drawings but when they are mounted on the axles, there is quite a lot of side play. However, give them a spin and the wheels run freely & true with no visible run out. Is this something that anybody else has encountered or have I misinterpreted something?

BTW, Axle EJ0105 - how long should the tapped stub be?

Hi Ian, I am building the 25pdr kit and also have the wobbly wheel problum, I found that the bearing fit on the axle stub is a slighty lose fit. I have used the remains of a 0.15 feeler gauge blade, to make a shim which fitted between bearing centre & stub akle. Provided that the shim is fitted in the same postion on both sides of the axle, there is no adverse effect on the wheel alinement.

On mine the retaining plate sits on top of the bearing outer race. I see from your photos yours seems to go over the bearing. My wheels wobble very slightly but I put it down to play in the bearing and fit to the axle. My axle measures at 0.470" and the bearing inner race measures at 0.472", so a 0.002" clearance. I'll try to measure the amount of wobble on mine and let you know for comparison. But Mark should have more information on the clearances and retainer when he sees your photos.

Boy do I feel an idiot, just noticed that you haven't got the retaining plate fitted in your photos, still I hope the measurements I took give you a comparison. Must look closer before commenting.
