WW1 Centenary Commemoration Event - The Tank Museum

The Tank Museum are holding an event on Monday 4th August to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the declaration of the First World War.

We will be attending this event and are interested to know if any customers would like to join us with their models.

Dennis, I wish! Mark and Gill's security is far too good for that. Subversion of the Forum, however, is perfectly in order......

After twenty odd years of cursing Chieftain, I've come to realise with the perspective of time that it was actually pretty good. If the Cold War had ever gone hot, it was arguably the most effective tank of its time. M60 was antequated and undergunned, Leo 1 and AMX 30 had armour you could penetrate with a Black and Decker drill and the potential oppositon had tanks which stowed ammunition such that a hit was likely to blow the turret off. The Royal Ordnance L11A5 was the most effective tank gun of its time and when we got the laser rangefinder, hugely overmatched the opposition. Once the unreliiable L60 power pack was developed, it all worked well, although it should never have had that engine in the first place. Turbines weren't the answer either unless you wanted to have your own fuel bowser alongside.

To confirm Denny's suspicion that I'm mad, I've signed up for the Chieftain Tank Appeciatiion Socitety on Faceless. Sad but true. It's worth a visit, if only to see the 1980s hairstyles and groucho 'tashes. (Denny, that's 1980s, not 1890s,, I'm not that old). To whet the appetite, how about the Third Royal Tank Regiment "in action"....

We will be in the Tamiya Hall and will set up from 8 am on the Monday morning (4th)

The museum would like vehicle registrations for those attending. Can those of you who have said you are coming e-mail me directly to confirm and let me have your registrations and I can then send the passes straight to you.
