The real question is does anybody have any knowledge of a reference book(s) with pictures and guidance on colour schemes?
Any information would be gratefully appreciated!

Hello Stuart,

Very few definitive books published on the Mark IV but Profile publications did this one and they have colour profiles in the centre pages. I have a copy at home but here is a link.

Also the Bovington tank museum has many examples of WW1 tanks with various camouflage schemes so any of their publications with pictures of these in them will help.
No doubt somebody will post some pictures. There is a sand, green and brown scheme with black outlines that I like.

Just got home and it is the French that had the scheme I like .The Brits are extremely plain in comparison. I suppose a Mark IV in French service is a bit too far fetched. Green, Brown or Grey it is then.

Thanks for that information! I have had a day off work with a cold that needs throwing off so I finished off Ian Verrinder's Tank Action in the Great War, an interesting read, and I now think a B Battalion Tank would be a good model to aim for.
The few photos in the book make me think that it is not so much a paint scheme, as a mud scheme! However getting the base paint right is something I will need advice on. For Mud, perhaps a trip to the most rutted part of the Ridgeway, (four wheel drives may have some use in their churning power) and running the finished tank through that should produce the correct patina.

Hi Will,
Why not do a German version as the Germans primarily used captured British tanks like the Mark IV. In fact when the Germans finally developed their own tank the A7V it was common for the crews to have served in a Mark IV previously. This may have given them an edge in combat against the Mark IV's.
An interesting pocket guide to read is one about Mephisto the only remaining A7V in the world. It also talks about the Mark IV including the first tank battle of three Mark IV's against one A7V.

The tank itself is currently getting restoration work at the Ipswich Rail Museum. (Queensland Australia)
Its still in good nick I saw it only a few months ago. It was captured by the Aussies at Villers-Bretonneux. Then shipped back to Australia. The Germans only got 20 A7V's to the front. Like the Mark IV they had female and male versions.

I now have a copy of Armour in Profile 1, Tank Mark IV. Thanks for the lead Will. It is a neat little publication, with some interesting photos and drawings. However I fell about laughing on opening the colour centre pages, it is a depiction of a green tank covered with loads of chalky grey/brown mud! So is it going to be faux mud, or the real maccoy?
