Rifle Sight on Sherman Turret

Does anyone have any close up pictures of the rifle sight mounted just in front of the cupola on the turret roof.

How did this sight work and what rifle/gun was it sighting?

Rich Stinchcomb has a couple of excellent close-ups on his Sherman DVD and there are also some shots of the Saumur Sherman on John Sander's website:

I must admit I haven't been able to work out how it was used as there seems to be too much difference between the front and back "sights"

Thanks for the tip on the site its very useful to me. I had forgoton about these photos from John. I can't think why they didn't come up last night after searching the web for ages.
