IWM Duxford Open Turret Event

Post by paul&robinmargle »

Hi,

I wonder if anyone has been to this event before. It is a day event (previously evening) open to Friends of Duxford, where they allow access to several vehicles in the Land Warfare Hall for you to climb on and sit in. I've been in many including: T-55, Challenger, Chieftain, Scorpion, Saladin, Abbot, Saracen, Hetzer, Sexton, Centaur, DUKW, JS-2 (I think) and Su-100. We've also had a look around the restoration workshop and handled some rifles. My Dad and I have been the last five years or so and we just got our tickets for this year on March 3rd. It's a great opportunity to get a feel of the solid armour, the uncomfortable seats and cramped conditions. I just manage to get my 6ft 1 in the Challenger driver seat

We had a bit more info come though about this year.
Apparently the Chieftain, Challenger, Scorpion, Saladin & BMP-1 will be accessible and they have a T-34/85 and Jagdpanther up from London. I should be able to get close and interior shots of any of them if anyone needs anything in particular.

T34 85 HATCH HINGES.jpg
Hi Robin,
I'm jealous of the fact that you and Paul can get along to see the IWN Duxford Open Turret Event in March.
I noticed you mentioned on your list that a T34/85 tank will be there at this event.
I have one of Armotek T34/85 kits, and working on upgrading parts for this kit.
Especially the driver's hatch on the T34/85 version.
I have made a start on the hatch hinges that holds the driver's hatch in place to open and shut, but don't have a clear good pics on the hinges arrangement at the top of the hatch nor from inside behind the periscopes area!...which from pics I've seen from various T34/85 tanks on the web and else where. But difficult to see how it works!
I was wondering if it would be possible to take a few pics for me of that area on the T34, while you and Paul are there at this event, seeing you can get up close to the military hardware etc.
Not to worry If you cannot get assess to this area, it would help me very much to find out how these hinges work and how to go about making them!

Hope you and Paul enjoy the event when it comes up.

We spent the morning at Duxford today. Because IWM London is having renovations until July they have a lot of vehicles up from there, we spotted several in the conservation hanger. We got in a very sandy BMP-1 and the Jagdpanther from London with cut away side and several holes shot in it. If anyone's interested I took a few pictures of the interior.
We also had a quick tour of the workshop, there's a little US WW2 bulldozer they're hoping to get working for the summer.
It was a good Sunday :)

Ian - I sent you an email with 5 shots, hope it helps.

Hi Robin,

Just checking your IWM Duxford Open Turret Event you and Paul were at, sounds like it was fun to be up close to the military vehicles, tanks etc.

Sorry I have not received any emails from you on the things I asked for on the T34/85 Driver's Hatch Door "HINGES" yet.

Here's my email address again for you, if you don't mind trying again to send pics from the event.
