Late tiger 1 suspension installation

Post by peterbarclay »

Hi guys I had some dramas with the axles binding when i tightened the fixed ends on four of them.Much sanding with emery cloth did not fix problem.I found by adding an extra locking washer to the fixed end solved this. They were binding on the shoulders so by spacing them out by small amount it was an easy fix.I could not remove them to fix in lathe .Word of warning for anyone about to install thier suspension.DO NOT USE THE SUPPLIED GRUB SCEWS. Use cap screws.I locktighted my grub screws in of course and when i tried to remove them they all stripped. Not lol. Cheers

Yes i know if i could have loosened the grub screws i could have fixed it by sliding the axles out slightly .Oh well .I had noticed in photos of someone's build that they used cap screws .I should have realised. A trap Cheers

Hello Lee,

I have a problem to loosen the M6 grubs on the fixt end on the torsionbars,
i used blue loctite so thats not the problem because blue loctite is not very strong.
But the problem is that the spring comes loose with the grub, so i wanne replace that
but i cant get the spring in anymore. Is there a solution to fix that, or need i new
suspensionbars??
It is strange to me that when i put the torsionbars in for the first time the grubs
comes very smooth in the holes, and after 2 years of riding with the tiger they are
extreamly hard to loosen.
best regards Yves

If they are helicoils, there is a special tool which twists them to reduce their diameter so that they can be inserted into the threaded hole

I have to say I've never met a stock Armortek Tiger which used helicoils - I'm pretty certain my 2010 Tiger just has plain tapped holes in the suspension bars, and the latest Tigers use Mark's new field-adjustable system with no bolt in the suspension bar.

Hello Yves

As Adrian said they are helicoils. As Ali is soft a steel insert is put in to give it stenth. You can By helicoil set M6. But there are several manufactures. I think Mark at Armortek will say which type they are. They are around £25 for the kit with about 20 helicoils in. I have only had to replace 1 in all the tanks i have built.

hello all,
when removing bolts that have been Loctited in use a bit of heat from a hot air gun etc, no need to get it red hot just heat the area up around the bolt then that's enough to break the bond,
chris.
