Re: New High Efficiency Drive System
Mark/Gill.
The new drive motors look very good, Can you explain there advantages over the old system and how you tested the new system. Would it be posssible to see a photo of the new motors and the old motors together to get a size comparison.
Final question, Which vehicles will the new motors fit.
Regards
Steve

Re: New High Efficiency Drive System
Hi Steve
I think just about all these questions are answered on the previous High Efficiency topic on this forum. Have a look at that. We will take a photo of the two variants and post later today.

Re: New High Efficiency Drive System
Thanks Mark for the side-by-side comparison photo. It is shorter a little bit, and smaller on the geared box.
Has it been test fitted on King Tiger?

Mark,
Good too see the news about the system.
See you and Gill at may.
Kind Regards Gerrit and Hannie.

Re: New High Efficiency Drive System
Mark,
I have a question about the new system because I read this:
Efficiency
A lot of users are rightly concerned about battery life. 4QD's controllers are carefully designed to minimise losses and therefore to maximise battery life. Older controllers used low (audible) frequency for switching: this increases losses in the motor, so the motor runs hotter. 4QD's controllers use 20kHz to reduce motor losses to a minimum. Also, 4QD controllers draw very little current for the control circuitry. Lastly, we employ regenerative braking which actually uses the motor as a generator during braking and recovers some of the energy which is returned to the battery. There is also some advantage in using a higher current controller and the thickest wiring practical - the higher the current handling ability of these the less power will be wasted as heat.
Other causes of loss are inefficient motors: a permanent magnet motor will always be a better choice than a field wound motor since the field draws current, the permanent magnet doesn't. We can do nothing about this in our controllers.
The other major cause of loss in most machines is the gearbox. Since this usually comes with the motor economics rule here, but a good pinion gear train is more efficient that a worm and wheel, especially with regeneration where worm drives are usually very poor indeed. Do not use belt drive (toothed or plain) with a system employing regenerative braking.
Mark can you help so I understand it well?
Kind regards Gerrit.

Mark,
I have still no anser about the new driving system and I don't whant to make a dission at the last moment.
Please can you give me a point off vieuw about my last mail at the forum.
Sorry for my English it is not so good.
Kind Regards Gerrit.

Re: New High Efficiency Drive System
Hello Gerrit
I believe that the information you have read comes from the the 4QD website. This information is not relevant to the new Armortek systems. The 4QD speed controller is an analogue device, the Armortek speed control module is an all digital controller, having none of the control losses discussed. Additionally the way in which the regenerative braking is dealt with, is a generation ahead on the Armortek system.
The standard efficiency option includes a worm and wheel drive gearbox at 60-65% efficiency. The high efficiency option includes a patented offset spiral pinion drive (called Spiradrive) offering 95% efficiency. This is where the big difference lies.

Any update when the Drive system will be available for the King Tiger ?
I've sent a PM and a couple of emails with no responce.

Re: New High Efficiency Drive System
Very sorry Mark,
as ever my in box is overflowing.
The King Tiger has a different ratio final gearbox, the parts for this are on order however they have a long lead time and delivery to us is estimated in 8 - 10 weeks.
I will make a note and let you know as soon as they are available.

No worries at all, an over flowing mail box is a good thing!
I'll be ording soon motion, smoke and sound. gives me time to work on the wife.
Thanks a bunch
