Panzer 111L road wheel tyres

Post by phil fitzpatrick »

Hi All
Can anyone help with the best glue to retain the tyres to the road wheels.
I did the usual, sand the road wheel and cleaned the inside of the tyre with methylated spirit.
At first I used the ordinary loctite precision super glue, but several came loose.
I then used Loctite 401 instant adhesive which I was told is much stronger,
which I can vouch for.
Its absolutly brilliant at sticking fingers, eyes and other bodily parts, its a good job I washed my hands before and after going to the toilet.
My one finger stuck to a tyre as I pushed it on so I had to leave some skin behind.
It has improved it a lot but I still had two come loose.
Any recomendations.
My tank seems to have been up on the blocks more times than its been up the Kasserine Pass.
cheers
Phil

Hi Phil, I was advised to use Araldite, just used one pair of tubes to do the whole lot. Make sure sure you use the 6 hour one and not the 5 minute.
None of mine have come off yet and I have given it a fair bit of thrashing.

TYRE GLUE

Post by phil fitzpatrick »

Thanks Dennis,I've used some of the araldite steel on some of my detail bits, thats the 5 min one,and I think I've got some of the araldite precision which I think is about the six hour one,but I never thought of using that only because it didnt mention rubber on the pack.
I assume you put an even layer all round the rim to use the two tubes up.
Thanks I'll give that a go
Phil

Yes I just put a thin layer on the wheel not the tyre as it makes a mess if you put it on the tyre when you push it on. I also roughed up the rubber using a Dremel with a sanding drum on it but I expect you've already done that.

On a previous thread about tyres and glues, IC-2000 was recommended, which is a rubber-toughened cyano-acrylate super glue.

Loctite now seem to make their own version, called "Loctite® Super Glue UltraGel™"

Tyre adhesive

Post by phil fitzpatrick »

Thanks Adrian
I had a quick look in the R S Component catalogue for the industrial strenght adhesives and I saw two new ones by Locktite.
Locktight 480 Black rubber toughened
in the tech spec which R S are good for,it mentioned extra strong adherence to rubber and increased peel strength.
Another was Locktite 4062 ultra fast rubers and plastics.
both of these glues stick to all metals aswell, but they stick in 1 to 2 seconds and full cure in 5min.
So you would have to be pretty smart with these.
The local store at work had run out of the locktite 480 so I have ordered some and I've already got some araldite that Denis used,so I will have a try with both next time one comes loose.
Cheers
Phil

Hi Phil
I used the 480 on the Panther and the PzIII tires and it is really good
and strong.

Not cheap but it does what it says on the tin
