Pz III Road Wheels

The profile of the Pz III roadwheels is elusive, despite taking a lot of measurements on the Bovington vehicle. The kit wheels are very flat and a few brave souls have turned them to a more realistic shape.

Then, trawling through the archives at the Tank Museum, I came across a wartime British report on a captured Pz III in which bits of the tank were subjected to materials analyis which, in the case of the roadwheels, involved cutting one in half. Brilliant! Just the job, they must have been thinking ahead to Armortek.

This sketch is a tracing of the profile photographed in 1943:



The sketch doesn't show the hub cap.

And here's the real thing for comparison:





I doubt if there is enough material to turn the kit wheels to the full depth but it should be possible to get a good representation of the real profile. Dale - I'll send you a .jpg.

The photo below is the road wheel from the latest Armortek Panzer III, it looks like Mark has re profiled them (THANK YOU!)



It does look very similar to the ones which Derek has done, minus the welding.

I still have to add the welds by the tubes and the rims.

Incase you haven't seen this image. It gives a nice view of the cross section. Because these are in my future, I am very interested in how everyone is addressing the road wheels.
