Runnaway

Post by Roland Wallick »

Im bench testing my motors, and I notice that if I turn off the radio before the fuse box that the motors will start running on their own. Is this normal? Seems a little dangerous with the weight involved.
Also if I plug my reciever battery into the fuse box it wont work, that I have to plug it into the reciver like a normal rc setup.

Same experience. Fortunately it was on blocks and didn't end up like Tom's.

Lesson learned. Always turn main switch off first.

Im just working on my Pz4 right now, I could imagine my Panther or a Tiger, it would knock your door down. Definatly going to have to keep a close eye on our 5 year old, might find him flattened into the lawn. He will have to stick to the Stuart for now.

Roland,

Concerning your receiver battery connection you might want to check the fuse. It could be blown or pushed in insufficiently.
Cheers,

I have the battery issue resolved, it must have been something like Ad mentioned.
But I have one remaining problem, and I think it is a faulty controller box. Im hoping not, because of the delay it will cause in sending it back.
One of the drive motors I cannot stop. I can reverse its direction at will but I will never stop unless I cut the power.I switched the wires of the two controllers and the problem followed to the other motor.
I switched the channels on the radio and the problem followed to the other stick. Im all but ready to pack it up for the UPS man unless somebody has an idea.
On the bright side I am very happy at how I can crawl the one motor along, I just hope this is the case as well when it is pulling 150 pounds. Im sure it will be.

I posted about 3 years ago about how my tank ran thru my 62" big screen tv because I forgot to turn off in the right order...was a $2000 mistake!

Roland,

Have you checked/switched the wiring between the RC interface and the controller boxes ? If that doesn't solve the problem then ....... :?

Ouch Mike.

Yes Ad I tried that, I even tried a different radio, people kept telling me it was my spectrum radio, but where the controller goes the problem follows.
I think the verdict is in.

Hi Roland

Your's was only one side(controler) that was doing it? Because if I remember right, mine was only one side as well. So this isn't normal? Sorry, I am admittedly naive when it comes to RC gizmos.

Michael, Youch! Sorry to hear about your misshap.

When the radio was turned off, VROOOOOOOOOM! Motor would go as you describe in your post. I just assumed this was normal and have since changed the way I shut things down after running. Maybe I missunderstood your posts and you are describing something else.

Everything runs great while operating the tank.

Thanks

Tim

Oh I thought you had a bad controller.
Yes I guess this is normal for the Armortek setup, (the runaway syndrome) but Ive never experienced it in any other rc applications. Lucky I discovered it with my parts strewn all over the floor rather than assembled in the tank. I did read it in the manual but didnt think anything of it.

Hi guys,

After more than 40 years of RC experience (yes, I started with the famous tip-tip radio sets) I was under the impression that the standard turn-on/turn-off procedures were used worldwide.
Any RC vehicle may take off on its own if you do not follow the standard procedure and there is some radio interference in the air. If it hasn't happened to you, well I guess then you have been lucky :D .
Cheers,
Ad

You may be correct, Ive had twitches before, but Ive never had a 200 pound critter before. If a Tamiya took off it would not register in my memory like one of these. Good reason to look into a kill switch.
