Leopard track tension

Post by Paul Sparkes »

So the Leopard is running well ( I wont post a video here but you can find it on my YouTube (link in signature)) but I have a few small issues.

Tract tension is very picky, if the track is loose the tracks ride the rear sprocket, I saw this at the Armortek open day on the demonstrator. If the track is then tightened to eliminate this then I get a problem that the first road wheel is under tension and compressing the suspension, which isn't desirable.
Otherwise its running nice and smoothly.
The problem seems worse on the right side, and I think its related to the way the torsion bars are positioned as 1 set of wheels is further back than the others.
Other than that I trashed the front mudguard when it caught on the track, just a warning for others as it's pretty tight when the track tensioner is fully out.

Hello Paul,

Watched your video, looks good.... What is your drive system? i.e. motors / controller etc. They look nice units :D

All the best,

Chris.

Motors are my own tried and tested design. But I won’t talk about them here. But yes it does run well. 👍

Yes looks good performance. I recon also good that AT has introduced the Brushless system to the motion pack.

All the best,

Chris.

Hi Paul,

Have seen it on the YouTube. Very impressive on the speed and smoothness.

The un-desirable tension issue on the compression of first pair of road wheels, although not so obvious on your Leopard 2A4, it does exist in many tank models , small or large scales. Do you have solution how to eliminate this?

So far I was thinking of (1) replacing first pair of torsion bars with bigger diameter one , just like on Tiger 1 and King Tiger , or (2) replacing the first pair of coil springs (CV0118) with thicker one. Not sure if it works.

Kind Regards,
Lerh Chang
