WWII Jagdpanzer Hetzer! Were are they on display?

Post by Timo Haehnle »

Whenever I build a tank it is my hobby to learn as much as I can about the real tank. For the Hetzer is was the same, and after consulting a couple of books and the fact that there where more than 2800 produced, I expected to see a couple of those Hetzers on display and in museums.
Right now after researching those topic for about an year, I am a little disapointed, because in Europe I could only find ONE Hetzer from the Wehrmacht. All others are converted G13 from the Swiss Army.

Why do I care so much if it was a G13 or a real Hetzer?
The differences are not minimal and easy to detect:
  • Different Gun mounted 7,5cm / L48 from the StuG III insted of 7,5-cm-Pak 39 L/48
(you can tell from the muzzel break, or the thread at the end of the gun barrel)
  • Panoramic periscope insted of the Machine gun
  • Different lightning front and rear
  • Spare tire and other spare parts on the weak flanks
Not so obvious differences:
  • Gunner and Commander swapped seats
  • different engine, Saurer Diesel insted of petrol engine
(you can tell be the engine cover)
Out of my books and information I could find online, there should be a couple of Hetzers in Europe. Most of them I checked meanwhile and it is a really disapointing:

Hetzers that I checked:
Panzermuseum Munster (Munster Germany) G13 converted to Wehrmacht
Technik Museum Sinsheim (Sinsheim Germany) 2x G13 converted to Wehrmacht
Museum Overloon (Overloon Netherlands) G13 converted to Wehrmacht
Musée Des Blindés (Saumur, France) UNFORTUNATELY G13 converted to Wehrmacht
Here I was really disapointed, because Saumur has the largest tank collection of the world with 800 tanks.

Musée mémorial de la Bataille de Normandie (Normandie France) G13 converted to Wehrmacht
The Tank Museum (Bovington, UK) a REAL Wehrmacht Hetzer !The ony one I could find until now !
Bastogne War Museum (Bastogne Belgium) G13 converted to Wehrmacht

Hetzers I would like to visit in the future:
The Battle of the Bulge Museum (La Roche, Belgium) I expect a G13 converted to Wehrmacht, because of the pictures I could find.
Panzermuseum Full (Full, Switzerland) one G13 and as I learned from an insider, maybe an real Hetzer als well.
Mémorial Maginot de Haute-Alsace (France) I expect a G13 converted to Wehrmacht, because of the pictures I could find.

Thats all, as fare as I know in Europe. It looks like there are only one left in Europe, in Bovington.

Outsinde Europe there could be some more, but somewhat unreachable :(
Worthington Tank Museum (CFB Borden, Ontario, Kanada)
Tank museum Kubinka, (Russia)
Texas Military Forces Museum (Austin, Texas, USA)
Australian Armour & Artillery Museum (Smithfield, Queensland, Australien)

Really remarkable, because more than 2800 where build.
From the Jagdpanther I know there are still 7 tanks existing, thats more than "real" Hetzers.

Maybe some of you guys know other locations of Hetzers?

I’ll confess that I don’t know the difference between an original Hetzer and a G13 conversion …..
But there’s a Hetzer in the US Cavalry and Armor Collection at Fort Moore, Columbus, Georgia, USA.
